    Beginning of the end...

'97 5.7L, 2bbl mercarb, TB V, A-1 GenII. Wet oil fouling and carbon build-up on #3 spark plug. Compression in that cylinder 145psi. Compression in all other cylinders 160-170psi. Vacuum test OK... 18"Hg and steady at idle, 25"Hg and steady at 3000rpm. Replaced the fouled plug, runs pretty good...

    White Smoke

'97 5.7L, Alpha, Gen II., 2bbl Mercarb What causes white smoke? About two weeks ago, I ran the boat to the fishing grounds (45 min) at moderate speed (3200rpm), trolled for about 3 hours at 1200-1500rpm, ran back in at 3200rpm. No smoke until I throttled back, entering in the no wake zone...

    Trims up, but not down

'97 Alpha I, Gen II Not an electrical issue. Pump runs fine. Changed fluid, bled all the air out. Will trim down if I stand on top of it while someone else pushes the button. If I spray WD-40 on the tail rods, once I get it started, it will go down on its own, but kinda 'bumps' its way down...

    Very Disappointing

I hate to see that two of the more regarded contributers to this forum have reduced themselves to 'one upping' each other. Seriously, are you that insecure in your own experience and expertise to feel the need to drop to that level? Who would you rather take advice from: the guy who admits to...

    Valve adjustment

5.7L reman long block. Just had the heads done, and have it back together. Cold compression test on all cylinders good enough (150 was the lowest, 165 the highest). Looks like I'm back to having 8 functional cylinders again. Will recheck compression and do a vacuum test after I have it running...

1997 5.7 LExhaust Valve Stem Diameters... what cylinder heads do I really have?

1997 5.7L, Alpha I, Gen II, 2bbl, Thunderbolt V, flat lifters, non Gen+ Finally got some time to tear into this thing. Background info: - Zero compression #1 cylinder. - Pulled the head, #1 exhaust valve is bent, hit the top of the piston, most likely due to worn out valve spring. The free...

    Thunderbolt V ICM 1997 5.7L

1997 5.7L, 2bbl mercarb, TB V (w/o knock sensor), Alpha I Gen II. Seems I've been chasing my tail alot with following symptoms, all of which have been intermittent, in no particular order, no appart cause during recurrance and follow-on disapearance of the symptom(s): lack of power, rough idle...

    Timing Cover Missing Timing Marks

'97 5.7L, 2bbl mercarb, Thunderbolt V, Alpha-I (Gen II). Went to check the base mode timing prior to setting the idle mixture and speed and discovered the timing mark tab missing. There aren't any signs of one ever being there. But it's not immposible that it was broken off and painted over...

Engine stalls once, then runs great... 1997 5.7 L

'97 5.7L, 2bbl Mercarb, Thunderbotl V, Alpha I Gen II: After running the boat for about 40 minutes with no apparent issues, stopped and fished for a while. Restarted, and after a about a minute, it stalled. No sputter, no cough, like turning the key off. Restarted and ran fine. After running...

    Running on the muffs >1500rpm

Was curious about the basis behind the precaution of not running the engine at >1500rpm when using the garden hose and muffs for cooling. The only thing I've found in the books is that the suction of the outdrive water pump (impeller) at higher rpms could collapse the garden hose, restricting...

    Oil Pan Drain Plug

Are the oil pan drain plugs sealed with some kind of addhesive? Tried to loosen it with what I thought was a lot of force. It didn't budge, and I don't want to risk breaking something. I want to get it loose to flush a little clean oil through the pan. I had water in the cylinders and want to...

Symptoms of water in cylinders? 1997 5.7 L

'97 5.7L, 2bbl, A-I, Gen II. Fresh water cooled (closed cooling system). - Loosing coolant. - Starts OK when cold, but has a couple of slow (dead battery sounding) cranks before it cranks over fast enough to fire. - If I restart within a few minutes of stopping engine, it cranks right over. -...

    API Starters

Replaced the OEM starter about 3 years ago and saved myself $30 by buying the aftermarket (API) starter instead of OEM. So far this starter has cost me: -had to pull the engine to replace the flywheel ring gear. Replacement bolts that came with the starter were just a bit too long. They bottomed...

    Hard Starting After Warm-up 1997 5.7

1997, 5.7L, 2bbl Mercarb, Thunderbolt V, Alpha-1 From cold iron engine starts right up. After it's warmed up and sits for anything more than 10 or 15 minutes, it's a real pain in the butt to resart. Acts like it's flooded. I do get a whiff of fuel sometimes. If I keep cranking it, 30+ seconds...

    SBC Flywheel 1997 5.7 l

Getting ready to pull a '97 5.7L to replace the flywheel. Having a hard time cross referencing the merc part number (222-9520001) to the GM part number. I'm pretty sure it's a 14", 168-tooth flywheel. Once I get the old one off, I'll know soon enough. Just want to be sure I have the right parts...

Starter to Flywheel Engagement 1997 5.7

"'97, 5.7L, A1, 2bbl Replaced starter about 2 years ago. The new starter was aftermarket but I thought it was an exact match. (Didn't shim it.) Starter started making some grinding noise again. Pulled it out, the mounting bolts were slightly bent. Nothing visibly wrong with the starter, looked...

    Expected Boot Life

"Been on a boating sabbatical "Been on a boating sabbatical for a while... after 6 months of paying a broker $100/month to end up not selling the boat, I decided to bring it home and get her ready to slip again. I've been going over everything, and the one thing that keeps me awake at night...

First time out in about a mont First time out in about a month or so. The starter seemed to make a grinding-nashing kind of sound... I belive this is the beginning of the end of my starter. Any thoughts?
