    Trim Tab solenoids?...Mercruiser 228

I want to identify two side by side items in the engine compartment, forward on the port side. A friend of mine said that they are trim-tab solenoids. I thought trim-tab solenoids were contained within the trim-tab pump unit. Trying to attach photo. Thanks for any advice.

    Ignition fuse - Mercruiser 228

Engine would not turn-over completely dead and panel dials fuel quantity etc. not working. Found inline fuse had melted its plastic casing. This is located in a red wire running from rev-counter and into a wiring loom. I could not open the fuse carrier so I removed one end from the R/C and...

Oil pan capacity with filter - Mercruiser 228 V8 5 litre

Handbook shows oilpan capacity with filter as 6 quarts(5.7 liters). Before changing the oil I warmed the engine and then drained the old oil and removed the filter. With the engine cold put I in the new oil but the most it would take when the oil level was at full on the dip-stick was...

Problem was engine would turn over and fuel was reaching carburettor but would make no attempt to start. Not even a kick. Mechanic checked electrics and could not find any fault. He then hot-wired ignition, battery to coil+ and engine started immediately. He was of the opinion that a hard...

    Engine racing - Quadrajet carburetor

I recently dismantled, cleaned and re-assembled a Rochester Quadrajet carburetor which is on a Mercruiser 228 engine. No trouble starting engine and after it had been running steadily at 900rpm for about 10 minutes whilst waiting for the temperature guage to rise to normal level, the engine...

    Cleaning Rochester MV4 Quadrajet carburetor

I dismantled the above carb' as I've done in the past to clean it and sprayed the various jets etc. with carb' cleaner. The force of the spray on this occasion dislodged a small spring(one inch long and eight on an inch wide)and a small brass tube( inch and a half long and three sixteenth of an...

    Quadrajet carburetor choke

When my engine, a Mercruiser 228 is warmed up I notice that the choke lever has only moved about a quarter of an inch and that the engine tends to cut out when I am moving through neutral from forward to astern or vice versa. Increasing the tick-over cures the problem but of course means the...

Boat has been out of the for last 18 months and soon due to go back in the water. On occasion I've run the engine using ears(rectangular shape which covers all the inlet holes) connected to the stern drive with good water pressure. A small amount of the water escapes where the ears latch...

    Twist-grip barely moves

Evinrude 15hp two-stroke, 1983 vintage, manual start. I replaced the impeller some months ago and due to other committments had to put the engine to one side. Finally got back to it this week and found that the twist grip has only at most half inch of movement. This is between the segment...

Test run Mercruiser 228 engine out of water

I have a water tank which will just about accomodate the stern-drive and when full the water level would be about about 6 inches above the inlets on the side of the stern-drive(Mercruiser 1 Drive-Unit). Would it be safe to run the engine with this set-up? Otherwise I'll have to look around...

Mercruiser 1 Drive Unit will not engage gear

Unable to move control handle from neutral so I disconnected drive shift cable(the rearmost cable that runs into the stern drive casing) and this freed the control handle but didn't of course engage gear. The obvious answer would seem to be to replace the shift cable but is there other reason...

Mercruiser 1 drive-unit cannot engage gear

This is coupled to a Mercruiser 228(V8 5ltr engine). Boat has been out of the water since last June for various reasons but I've regularly put it in and out of gear whilst doing maintainence jobs with out any problems. Last week I found it was stuck in neutral. I disconnected both shift...

    Thermostat gasket with brass rivets

I run a Mercruiser 228 engine, old and No. 4902956. I'm in process of replacing the thermostat and found one of the old gaskets has two brass rivets on each side whereas none of my replacement gaskets have this feature. I assume they wouldn't be there if they didn't serve some purpose but I...

    Draining Mercruiser 228 cooling system

Are the petcocks on cylinder block fragile? I tried turning the taps but they are very tight and I'm afraid of using too much pressure and snapping something. Likewise the various drain plugs won't move. I've given all a good dose of WD40 and could use a long torque wrench with socket on...
