Oil pan capacity with filter - Mercruiser 228 V8 5 litre

Handbook shows oilpan capacity with filter as 6 quarts(5.7 liters). Before changing the oil I warmed the engine and then drained the old oil and removed the filter. With the engine cold put I in the new oil but the most it would take when the oil level was at full on the dip-stick was 4 litres. I ran the engine and checked level when it was cold and the level was the same. As far as I know the difference between US and UK measurements would not account for the difference. The old oil which I drained was 4 litres. Any info' appreciated.

what handbook says that, manual 3 says 5 -1/2 Qts with filter

Did you get ALL of the old oil out?

I would say based on my experience,

Most all small block V8 chevy marine Mercruiser motors use 5 quarts unless a remote oil filter is used then 1/2 quart more.

Handbook entitled Mercruiser Stern Drives Model 228 Brunswick Corp. 1980 C-90-92122(0580) came with boat. Shows Approx 6 Qts(5.7 Liters) oil pan cap. with filter. Suction tube at bottom of sump and pump would not draw any more oil out Thank you all for your replies.

Yes it does say 5 1/2 qrts.

But as always recommended, fill to full level on dip stick only.
