Johnson 70, 1986 no start after 30 mins

My 1986 Johnson 70 hp will start from cold by advancing the throttle and pushing the choke/primer one time. After reaching full operating temperature measured with a IR thermometer 140 degrees I can shut the engine down and then quickly pump the key switch and it will start instantly. If I...

    Overheat Horn

I'm running a remanufactured 60HP Jonson model year 1992. During the break period I had the overheat alarm go off a couple times. One time it went off while I was in reverse for a few minutes. It also will run hot on the earmuffs. At idle in the water it seems to be fine. around 100...

Engine Bogs down - 75 HP Johnson, 1981

I replaced all the plugs wires and coils on 3 cyl 1981 75 hp. It ran great for a while (most of the summer) but recently bogs down when trying to go on plane. If I burry the throttle in gear it feels like no power no rpms, I can rev the engine to full rpm out of gear. Carbs where rebuilt and...

    Leakign Carbs

After using my 1981 Johnson 75 hp trim my motor all the way up. When I come back to use the boat again there is fuel all over the front of the motor under the air box Carb lines were checked for leaks already. What else could cause this? Anybody else seen this?

Water in midsection exhaust 1981 j75TRLCIM

I have emulsified oil in the lower midsection, noticed it today when I took the lower unit down. Also saw water coming through the prop hub. Never saw that before. Something else unusual was water coming out near the lower motor mounts.

    J75TRCIM 1981 Fast idle

Just started motor after rebuilding all 3 carbs and replacing fuel lines. Hard starting and ran very fast at idle. I checked all linkages. I don't see idle speed adjustment. I retarded the timing by bulking backwards on the timer base and the engine slowed to normal. When I let it go back the...

    Johnson J75TRLCIM 1981

Tested rectifier voltage, I get about 7.8 volts per lead - total output runs at 15.6 and sometimes higher at full rpm. My electronics are only rated to 14.7 Is there an aftermarket rectifier that can regulate voltage too?

Is it worth removing the head to clean inside the water passages? I have all the gaskets.

    Johnson J75TRLCIM 1981 Bearing Carrier

At the prop end of the bearing carrier there is a small notch cut out to drain water. Is there anything else about the carrier that it MUST go in with the notch down besides draining water out.

    Johnson J75TRLCIM Shift Shaft Seal

Does anybody have a trick to install the o-ring in the shift shaft cover, P/N 388651. Cost of new part is 200 bucks, o-ring = 10 cents. There has to be a way to get that the o-ring into the groove.

    1981 J75TRLCIM Exhaust

I see the exhaust comes out of the prop hub and also the two holes on back of the midsection. On some you tube videos I also see that water comes out of the two holes. Where should I see water coming out of this engine? I am thinking that I might have blockage inside the engine. Should I...

    Johnson 75 water pmp

Installed new pump with complete kit. Water pumped good fro three times out. Started to get weak and then completely quit when I put the muffs on. What should I look for. Maybe the key was wrong. I used the white one that came in the kit. Which way should it go on the shaft?

75 HP Lower Unit Seals, Johnson

I cant tell from the parts diagrams or the shop manual which way the prop shaft seals and the drive shaft seals get installed. They go back to back, but the inner seal goes in first flat side out and then the outer seal should go against it with the rubber lip facing out? Any body got pictures?
