Wrong Prop washer.

I recently replaced my water pump impeller and while doing so I realized that the wrong prop washer was previously installed on my motor. The prop nut goes on to the point where the cotter key is past the entire nut not just in the slots.

Should I buy the correct one (about $30) or since it just holds the prop on the shaft it is fine?

I would absolutely go with the correct thrust washer if that's what you mean.
With all the lash that you probably have I can imagine the. Prop banging the thrust washer you have now against the gear case seal area with every hole shot.
That kind of force might crack the case at some point. I wouldn't risk it If I were you.

If you're referring to the washer directly behind the nut, you wouldn't necessarily need to purchase one from Honda. It wouldn't even need to be 1 washer. Just use decent stainless steel washer(s) to obtain a near 0" lash. No more than $4 or $5 bucks I would think.

The thrust washer is correct. The washer that goes on after the prop but before the nut is the wrong one.
 
Ok, then the second paragraph of my updated post above should apply. The outer washer is only to take up slack. i wouldn't pay $30 for any stainless flat washer. That's a GOVERNMENT MILITARY price that we should all pooh pooh!

Ok...my mistake...I should have looked at the parts diagram before offering advice.

Still, I don't believe that this has to be rocket surgery...or...brain science if you prefer.

The deal is that the washer is still just acting as a "place holder" to give the nut something to rest against and take up slack. It is "stepped" to fit into the recess of the prop. In this particular case you may want to just buy the $30 part and be done with it.

It would still be ok to stack a smaller OD washer ( or two or three) to fill the recess under a larger OD washer to achieve the "clamping" (ever so slight clamping of course). But it would require you to do some fairly deliberate measuring to get it right. And, you might have difficulty finding the small washers that have a pretty close OD to fit properly in the recess. Otherwise you would end up having to cut larger ones to fit. A grinder would work a lathe would work better.

It's a matter of how bad do you want to save a few bucks.
