Would overheating cause engine to turn off and kill fuel pump?

I know this sounds like a crazy question, but let me explain..2 weeks ago I put a brand new fuel pump on my 2003 200hp and it ran great after I replaced it. The prior pump lasted me 2.5 years..today, I was running my outboard on garden hose, engine was cold and idling..it ran for about 5-6 minutes or so when I noticed that the muffs were not exactly on and the engine was not peeing, ten seconds later the engine turned off...I let it cool for about 20 minutes and tried to start it and it turned over, but no start...I checked the fuse box on port side, all fuses are good..I opened up bolt on VST and nothing would come out when key is turned..I can hear pump hum for a few seconds then it cuts off..there is fuel in VST. IS there a fuse or relay that cuts off pump when engine gets above operating temp..btw, the temp was 208 degrees when it turned off..I had my scan tool plugged in.

The overheat may cause the engine to stop, but I do not know of anything that will permanently keep the fuel pump turned off.

I have not had any major problems with any of our 200/225, so my troubleshooting experience on these is limited.

I have never tried to see if there is fuel pressure coming out of the drain tube. If in doubt, remove the screw on the cover for the high pressure filter, then turn the key to on (put a rag there to catch the fuel that should come out). If you have a fuel pressure gauge, connect it there and actually measure the pressure. Then you will know for sure about that.

The safety landyard didn't get knocked off did it? I know it turned itself off....but if that happened to me, I would have probably hurried to turn the key off and maybe even try to restart and with my "great dexterity"" probably would have caught something on the landyard and pulled it off, while thinking about the problem.

Also, look over all the connections, etc that you removed to change the fuel pump. Something may have some loose there.

You should not be running the 200 or 225 on a garden hose with muffs in the first place. They will always overheat. You need to use a big tub. A typical trash can won't fit.

If you are hearing the fuel pump run for 1.5 seconds when the key is turned to ON...then that is normal and would indicate that the fuel pump is operational.

I may be wrong but I don't think 208* would be considered "overheat". And, even if it were programmed that way into the computer's "schedule of events", it should only cause a power de-rate with warning light and alarm. Not an engine shut down.

Are you positive that fuel is what is missing during the no start? Does it have spark? If you have any way to artificially introduce fuel...IE: propane is ideal....this would be an instance to use it.

Just throwing out some ideas.

Good luck.

I've never had problems before with hose, but I yanked old muffs off when they were still connected, new muffs don't fit as good...so there really is no "reset" or "fuse" for fuel pump in an over heat situation...as mentioned in first post I did remove screw on vst and pump is not pumping out fuel, but it is humming....these Honda pumps are strange, just because they hum doesn't mean they pump fuel..I have had replaced two of them over the years and they have an integral part in them that either breaks or shuts off flow to the pump outlet..if pump is bad, when submerged in fuel it will turn on but not pump out fuel...anyways I can't understand why a brand new fuel pump would go out unless I have an electrical short somewhere..

I have the same problem you have, I have been replaced 4 pump, same. after first run, they burn out. I checked everything. VS, lines, LP pump, Can you tell me if you fix yours....? and what cause that....?

Check your fuel pressure at the vst, mine was up in the 90's due to clogged screen near pressure regulator and fuel rail. It should be somewhere around 45 psi if i remember correctly.

I did. my motor is a 2008 225 hp , today I chaged the fuel pressure regulator and put it another fuel HP pump, that one is # 5 been replaced new. only last for one run, after I turn the motor off, done, never fire up again. same problem, fuel HP pump burn out. here is a picture of my motor right now, can you tell me where is the screen near the fuel regulator, I was looking for, but I don't see it.

Pull the fuel pressure reg off and the screen will be in the fuel rail. Also Did you remove and clean out the screen in the vst where the fuel pump sits? Also check to make sure your low pressure pump is working and that the fuel solenoid valve is actuating.

- Solenoid Valve working
- Low pressure pump working
- Screen in the VST clean.
- Tomorrow I will clean or replace with a new one, the Fuel rail mesh , part # by Honda 16614-P5G-003 . and go to the water again to see what is happening. I hope now work Ok. This is driving crazy. I don't know at this point what to do.

Here are the filter and screens you should be looking at. Each link shows where it is.
