hi all , new to boating , i travel a long way on dirt roads with a 4.1m tinnie and 15 hp honda outboard 2011 model

we generally go with two or three vehicles so i put my motor on one of those , id like to make a crate to stow camping gear and be able to carry my motor in my holden colorado tub back twin cab ute

i know you have to lay them flat on one side , what i want to know is can i make a rack so i can clamp motor on horizontal but still have the motor not on its side

ive attatched a very quick photoshop merge to give you an idea of what i mean , not my car or motor or rack lol but you can see what i mean

my rack will be well supported and the motor secured , but as i said can i tram it this way, i want to have my generator fridge etc under it

I would think that if you left a bit of "down angle" into your design you could accomplish what you want but not risk having the oil migrate from the sump into the upper part of the cylinder.

In other words, I would avoid leaving the outboard in a perfectly horizontal position regardless of on it's side or in "full tilt" as in your depiction.

The truth be known, the suggested "horizontal transport" position and "side selection" is more about avoiding an oil spill than it is about keeping the oil in the sump. If you lay one down, the oil is gonna move.

My advice to anyone transporting an outboard horizontally is to allow the motor to sit for a considerable amount of time in the "upright" position to allow for the oil to find it's way back to the sump prior to first starting it up. I would also advise you, at least in the first instance, to pull the plugs and crank the engine briefly to determine if any oil made it to the combustion chamber. Chances are if you don't see any problems the first time you try this then you might be reasonably safe is skipping this step in the future. But, for the outboards well being, I always defer to the side of caution.

Just my opinion. I'm sure there will be others

Good luck.

Agree with Jimmy - You should transport the motor at verticle, or at a tilt, with engine up. What I don't understand is why you don't leave the motor attached to the boat and use a standard transom bracket to hold it in a tilted position.
