starter problem

Hi all
Just getting ready to take the boat out for the first time this year... on starting the motor I had the motor running no problem, when I went to restart it a few hours later it turned over a few times, on the third time turning the key it stopped cranking and all I get now is a loud click sound which as far as I can tell is coming from the starter solenoid, nothing else happens.
The motor is a 1972 65hp evinrude electric shift model no. 65273
Does anyone have any idea what may be the issue? and is there anyway to fix it? can you bypass the solenoid if you get caught like this on the water?

cheers
Paul

Sounds like a weak battery or dirty cable ends? You can jump the starter direct from the battery with jumper cables. Make sure the battery is fully charged and clamp the neg cable from battery neg to a good engine ground then just jump pos directly to the stud on the starter. If the starter turns the motor over it is a bad connection, wire or solenoid.

Make sure the throttle is on slow in case it starts and stays in forward gear. You have the hydro electric shift and forward is the default gear position. The motor will run without battery power but the gearbox will stay in forward gear. If you start it at high throttle speed in forward gear people can get hurt or dead. Be real careful when bypassing the safety switch.

Thanks for that, going from what you have said I have checked further, the battery is charged fully, power is getting to the starter motor at the cable lug on the starter motor so I now think the issue is possibly the starter motor itself. Could it be something like the brushes??
