Hey guys need some help once again its a easy question ..

2002 honda 225

there is a zinc under bracket on motor that is all calcified up , I usually hit it with a wire wheel grinder white powder blows every where ..

do you'll thing it helps or is a sacrifiscial zinc doesn't matter if its cruded up ?

Re: questions on zinc's

I agree with justintime. The "crud" acts as an insulator and prevents the anode from giving up electrons. If it can't "sacrafice" electrons then the metals that you don't want giving them up will do so.

Re: questions on zinc's

Looks like you are boating in saltwater, as I am. I make it a practice to change out the zinc's about every two years. At every 100-hour maintenance period, I remove the zincs, clean them with a wire brush mounted on a grinder, and thoroughly clean the contact surfaces on the engine so there is very good contact, which is necessary for the zinc's to work as intended. Also, clean up the SS mounting bolts - they tend to get pretty corroded with salt deposits.

If you want to be a bit compulsoive and more precise, then the next time you replace your zinc's, weigh them first. Then, every time you remove them, weigh them again. If the weight is less than 70% of the original weight, replace them. Otherwise, clean them well and re-install.

Normally, I have my boat on a lift at my home. However, this winter, I have it docked in a marina at Hatteras. I've noted much more rapid deterioration of the zinc's, even though the motor is tilted out of the water when docked. Not sure why that is, but changed out the zinc's at the last 100 hour maintenance.
