Oil Leak - 200HP

Just returned home from a long tow and noticed that there is oil leaking from where the lower unit attaches to the middle section of the engine. I checked the filter and I did not see any leak from that point. Oil levels are fine; any idea where it could be coming from?

Are you sure that it's engine oil and not hydraulic fluid from the tilt/trim? Check that level.

No, the leak is coming from the engine. Right wear the top part of the lower unit meets the midsection of the outboard. It is an extremely slow leak. I also just topped up the tilt trim fluid prior to my trip. Any thoughts?

Upper engine mount cover is corroded and needs replacing.Powerhead must be removed to gain access

Just make sure it's not either a top or lower shift shaft seal. Upper mount cover usually leaks from the top engine mount housing, shift shaft will leak from the cowl when tilted for upper seal( easy fix) or from where the upper shift links with main lower shift shaft seal, again, powerhead and mount case removal required.

Would it be wise to remove the lower unit and inspect that area, or is it coming from the engine mount area?

Sorry, only you can tell, I can't see your motor. Can you take a photo of exactly where the oil is coming from? Most commonly, when tilted and leaking small amounts of oil it's from the upper shift shaft. If from the mounts it leaks out from the actual top mount housing.

When the motor is tilted, it leaks at the blue circle. Where the lower unit meets the main stem of the motor.

When the motor is upright (as you see it in the image), it leaks from the pink circle (you can see a slight drip line).

If I remove the lower unit, would I see oil as you mentioned coming from the shift shaft?

Yes, the pic tells me nothing, you have to identify the origin of the oil leak
