O2 sensor? 2003 225hp

So I went down to the boat tonight to run the motor for a little bit (2003 225) It started right up and idled for about 15 mins then stared sputtering, stumbling, and running rough, no smoke then cut off. I restarted and it ran about 20 sec snd did the same thing. I then pumped the primer ball 3 times until it was tight and restarted it ran about 4 mins and did it again. While it was running I kept checking the primer ball and it stayed tight the whole time no changes. I changed out my Racor and re primed and restarted and got the same results. It's stumbling like it is starving for fuel. I cycled the key 4 times and was then able to pump the ball 3 times until tight. I cycled the key 4 more times and was able to pump the ball again 3 times until tight. I repeated this 4 times and then restarted the motor. It ran about 5 mins then stumbled and shut off. I'm ready to trade this thing off to some other sucker, I wish it would run for more than 2 months without problems.

Re: O2 sensor?

Any alarms or lights on your key switch panel come on?

From what you described it sounds like the engine is initially running on the gas that's in the VST, but not getting replenishment or getting very slow replenishment. My main suspecian would fall to the VST and the screen and needle valve in there.

But before tearing into that, I would first drain the VST IAW the owners manual (you need a very long flat blade screwdriver and a clear one quart container to catch the gas, water and junk that comes out of the VST), then pull off the onboard fuel water separator and clean it out well. If you have the separator with the electrical connector on the bottom, make sure the float is not stuck and operating up and down smoothly. Next, pull the low pressure filter filter and clean it or replace it, if you have another one handy.

Once you have it back together, check the connector to the LP fuel pump, then have someone turn on the key while you listen for the low pressure fuel pump to start up. Your bulb squeezing should have overcome any problem with the LP fuel pump, but you never can tell.

If all that fails, then remove the lower cowling, remove the VST and clean it out and check the screen and make sure the needle valve is clean and operating properly. While your in there, check/change the HP fuel filter.

Re: O2 sensor?

No alarms, and thats exactly what i was hoping not to hear. taking that VST out is a PITA i'll try the low pressure filter first.

Re: O2 sensor?

I have had lots of issues with my 2002 225 motors over the years, I would diffently change lp and hp fuel filters they are pretty easy to change and if doesn't fix proably need changing anyway. When my o2 sensors needed changed boat would run great while moving when I slowed down would come on and would reset by turning key off would fix for aawhile then same problem. Your problem sounds like a fuel issue not o2 sensor from my past issues with my motor

Re: O2 sensor?

yup its the float needle stuck does that mean I need to replace the VST tank lid to replace the needle seat or can I buy just the seat. anybody know what a vst lid costs? this sucks now I need to tow all the way back to the ramp to get it on the trailer to change out the needle and seat.

Re: O2 sensor?

Great that you found the problem. You have now exceeded my level of competence since I have never had to get into the needle valve in the VST. I'll defer to the Honda Tech's on that question. But, it seems that replacing the needle valve and seat would be a fairly easy operation. Look for a parts diagram and get the parts numbers.

Re: O2 sensor?

can you believe it $212.00 for the VST Lid it better be made of gold and be able to pleasure me. The seat is part of the lid and then the needle is sold seperately for another 35.

Re: O2 sensor?

I looked at the parts breakdown of that thing and the valve looks suspiciously like the float valves that are in the Honda carbs. Can't tell from the picture if they are EXACTLY the same but if yours has a neoprene rubber tip on the valve like the carburetors do, I don't really think that you would need to replace the seat. I've never seen a seat wear on the carbs with the soft tipped needle valve. HTHY.

holy crap remove all the cowls disconnect 5 million hoses remove the intake disconnect the throttle cables. stretch your fingers 3 inches ( I have fat fingers) remove the VST simialar to solving a rubix cube. replace the lid and needle which was seized to the seat ( needed a pair of needle nose to twist it out???) put it all back together 2 and a half hours later with a splitting headache and no skin on my knuckels and it runs just fine. I'll post some pics of the needle seat after I pull them off the camera. (Can't wait till E-15 hits the docks) I sure hope some of these legislators get stranded sometime over their fuel...

Glad you got it fixed. Hope you changed the HP filter while you were in there. Would really like to see the pictures, since I have never had to tear mine apart, YET!

I've been using Valvtec treated gas for the last two years and it seems to mitigate those kinds of problems since it has a stabalizer and a cleaner/decarbonizer mixed in. You can buy that stuff and mix it into your gas yourself if it is not available at any of the places where you buy your fuel. However, many of the marinas up here in the Middle Bay are starting to carry it because many of the big Bay cruisers are demanding it.

I LIKE THIS GUY!!!!!!
I BELIEVE WE ARE ALOT ALIKE.

Ya mean you didn't know that working on your Honda O/B was the same as working on a Honda car? Usually, just a bit LESS greezy.

I halloween 2010 001.jpghalloween 2010 002.jpgIt's totally Criminal that they would use two dis-similar metals when the fuel being sold today is mostly water anyways after it it exposed to the atmosphere for a while. A Brass seat and an aluminum needle. No wonder these things stick
