I am looking at a 2010 Honda 75 tiller to purchase. It has a little over 600 hours on it. Would that be considered high hour use? Should I be looking for any type of problem that might be showing at that amount of use.

take it to a dealer and buy a couple hours of a good techs time to look it over for you would be my advice...

Agree with Papyson. Consider it an insurance cost to make sure you are not getting a lemon. There are many awful stories out there from people who bought used outboards being told one thing by the seller and getting something entirely different. Try splitting the cost with the seller. Even if you do not buy the engine, the seller will have some documentation of the state of the engine (assuming he/she wants it.)

600 hours on one of these is just a few oil changes....not much time at all...that is....IF the oil WAS changed!

AND....IF the stated hours are TRUE and not FUDGED or FALSIFIED.

I agree with the others about getting some expert opinion as to the "health" of this outboard.

While there are MANY legitimate reasons for selling an outboard, I would want to know WHY this particular outboard is for sale so early in it's life. People will sell machinery to get rid of a problem. Some problems are small and innocent.IE: can't afford it anymore...wrong application...too big....too small...

OR it could be more sinister as in....shuts itself off after 30 minutes of run time....hard to start sometimes and no one can figure it out...that sort of stuff. I had a guy try to sell me a Honda outboard...40 horsepower...that had a HOLE IN ONE OF THE PISTONS!....He wasn't trying to rip me off....he admitted that he was selling because it "didn't run right"...he had no IDEA how bad the damage was until I explained it to him!

The seller should be READILY willing to discuss the reason they are "getting out" and should be agreeable to having a 3rd party (at your expense unless otherwise agreed upon) check the outboard for serviceability. If they balk at either....take a walk.

What we are saying is; Honda makes an EXCELLENT product...rugged, reliable and dependable with proper care. You COULD be looking at a fantastic deal.....but just be VERY cautious.

Good luck.
