I'm in the process of performing a tune-up on my 2004 5.0L MPI engine and would like to know if I need to find Top Dead Center (TDC) before I replace the distributor cap and rotor.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

just remember its 2-4-6 and coil on the left and 3-1-5 on the right side
and the cylinders a 2-4-6 on the left and the cylinders on the right are 1-3-5

That is correct!
You would only need to begin at #1 TDC C/S if doing an R&R of the entire distributor in order to be close enough to fire up.

I'm thinking that the OP's engine is a GM 5.0L with 8 cylinders!

Also, it would sure be nice if someone would come up with universal terms to describe right/left without needing to mention which direction you are facing at the time. Perhaps something like "Port" and "Starboard"!
:D In which case the GM SBC #'s 1, 3, 5 and 7 cylinders would be on the Port side, and #'s 2, 4, 6 and 8 cylinders would be on the Stbd side.
(just teasing you Bt Doc!)
:D

Replace ONE wire at a time.

Jeff
Ditto that!

Unless it's an old Chris Craft with flywheel-forward engines

for some reason I was thinking v6 but your motor is a v8
