Johnson starter

I have a 1976 Johnson 70 hp and replaced the starter, but I noticed the new starter gear has 9 teeth on it and the old starter has 10 looks like the new starter gear fits the teeth on the fly wheel ok could it be the gears are just a lil bit different size? Seems to start up ok just wondering thanks.

I race go karts as a hobby and know a lot about ratios. Here...try 40 tooth ring and 10 pinion then try 9. Picks up 1/2 a evolution

One revolution of a larger bendix (more teeth) would cause the flywheel to turn further... BUT... it would at the same time put a larger load on the starter.

However, wouldn't that require more amperage?... OH, who the hell cares? :)
