I hope I Didnt Destry my BF40.......

Had the little whaler out yesterday - ran good, pee stream was good, motor purring like it suppose too - all was well...Finished the boat ride and put it back on the trailer and took her home to clean her up......until I screwed up...

I had the boat on the trailer and was washing all the saltwater off - I then put the muffs on the motor, taped the hidden place under the cavitation plate.....then turned the water on and began flushing the motor out....
Pee still good, water strong...motor running good.....

My phone rings and I go answer it...I walk inside the house, take care of a few things, hearing the motor running fine..... After about 4 or 5 minutes I go back outside and motor still running, the water is still on, but I notice that there is nothing coming from the pee hole, I quickly look at the muffs and they have slide down slightly, not covering the intakes like they should.

I shut down the motor, get the muffs where they need to be and start the motor back up - she fires up ok, and now she's peeing - but man is it hot water.......after about 30 seconds, the water is normal temp -

I am hoping I didnt destroy the motor by letting it run while I was in the house - and it not peeing, i have no idea how long it was like that...

Is there anything I can look for, or is there any sign/sympton that i can check to see if I tore it up or overheated it?

I didnt hear an alarm - but I am not sure this has an overheat alarm....

Any advice or information is appreciated....

Lesson learned - stay with the damn boat - to heck with the phone...

thanks guys

Folks more familiar with the 40 will likely jump in here, but from what you described, I suspect that the initial hot pee stream was the water just pulling out the build up heat from when you shut down the engine. Sounds like you lucked out. If you are still worried about it, put in a new impeller. When you do that, carefully inspect the old impeller to make sure none of the vanes broke off and have lodged in the water passages.

I am not familiar with that motor either....hondadude may be able to answer the alarm question....i would follow up on that for sure and make sure the overheat alarm is working if it has one..and i think it does..if that is working and it didnt go off i would just run the motor...if it is there but not working i would fix it and then check compression..

Sounds like you lucked out. I agree with chawk_man that the hot water you felt was from water trapped in the bypass that picked up some "hot soak" heat from the head when the engine was off. If she still starts easily and has the same power as before on the water, then I wouldn't swat it too much. Can't answer the alarm question though, sorry.

Ditto all of the above.

As long as your pee stream is strong, you are probably ok. The thermostat fully opens at 162 degrees. The alarm sounds at 194 degrees plus/minus 4. So it may not have gotten hot enough to sound the alarm. You don't really know how long it was running with the full water pressure.

My guess is that the engine was getting some water (but not enough pressure to pee and probably not enough to get up throughout the entire powerhead.)

The 40 can take a lot of abuse. You should see the poor 40's that come in that are on workboats. They are beat to death, but still do not die (as long as we stay on the companies about regular maintenance.

To make you feel comfortable, take the boat out but do not stray too far from where you put in. Run it at mostly low to middle speeds. If the impeller has lost any pieces, an overheat will show up at a slower speed before the higher speed.

Even if you get an alarm, you can still get back to the dock/trailer.

I shouldve played the lottery that night - i ran the boat - she appears fine......big lesson learned - never ever - leave the boat on the muffs if she's running......couldve been expensive.......

Mike - is there suppose to be an alarm in the controller? - I know if you pull the wire off the overheat sensor - it will light up red - but never have heard the alarm go off - My BF150 has a series of beeps when u turn the key, the older little BF40 does nothing - just starts right up....(by the way - she starts on the first attempt even after sitting for a few weeks).......Honda's are pretty bullet proof.....
Curious about the alarm tho, I looked at schematics and it appears it should be there....wondering if there is a method to test it.....the alarm that is...

thanks

jeff

The alert does not sound when you turn the key on like on your 150. You should be able to test it by grounding the lead for the overheat switch. With the engine not running, I think you will get just the light to come on. If the motor is running, you should get the audible alarm also.
