How do we feel about cheap fuel filters?

Just gathering parts to service my 225 and I'm fairly horrified at the cost of an original Honda high pressure fuel filter (£30-40 here in the UK).

A quick search on eBay shows Chinese (yeah, I know) filters for about £6!

Now if this was an oil filter I wouldn't start to consider it, but this is a paper fuel filter that really needs replacing every year regardless of hours.
Plus I'm sure that honda don't make their own filters.

Has anyone tried the cheaper filters - did it all end in tears?

Interesting.
Are you convinced that a fuel filter (that, for all we know might be made by the OEM manufacturer) will cause a breakdown within 50 hours use?

For all we know honda simply buy filters from a 3rd party manufacturer who put them in a Honda bag - in fact I'm sure this is the case.

I use a quicksilver external fuel filter/separator that's about 4 times the size of the internal filter (and has a metal casing) and yet costs half as much - why isn't that a worry also?

We're discussing a HIGH pressure filter, right? If this filter becomes "slightly" plugged (say a little water for instance), it's going to be acting as a restriction in a high pressure line, meaning it MUST be capable of withstanding any pressure that pump is able to put out, without failing in any way. A mickey mouse filter may use filter media that's easily blown out in a high pressure environment. This in mind, consider where that blown out filter media is going to end up. Right in an injector, or spread across several injectors.

Now how much money did you save with the inexpensive (non approved) high pressure filter?

That said, a decent external filter should let that expensive Honda high pressure filter lead a long healthy life.....

Agree with Alan. Of all the parts on the 225, that HP fuel filter is one of the most critical. Even if it just clogs up early, it will cause you performance problems. And if it comes apart, you will get the result that Alan explained.

Hmmm.
It would be great to be able to test one properly without risk.

TBH I looked at the price of Chinese low pressure filters and they're not that much different which makes me wonder about the high pressure one.

As I keep my boat on the water for 8 weeks over the summer it would be difficult to swap out a high pressure filter - which puts me off trying it.

Just bear in mind though that OEM stuff comes from somewhere. The aftermarket O2 sensors that I use last as long as the Honda part and are less than half the price. While the seals I bought for the high pressure filter housing work perfectly, cost me pennies and are a fraction of the cost of one in a Honda bag.

Have you considered buying from Impex Japan. They have genuine parts at very good prices, although not as cheap as Chinese. Your filter is about 25 UK pound + shipping. So probably not worth it just for one filter. But if you place a larger order it could be worthwhile.

I'm not saying buy all Honda parts. I'm just suggesting you need to consider the price/results of a failure. A cheap oil filter comes to mind here as well.....
