Honda BF40A model year 2012

Hello All
1st day, 1st thread. My Honda BF40A for the first time after years of reliable operation my main fuse, 30A mini fuse blows. Only thing different from years past is a new AGL battery, Duracell 12V 35AH AGM. Exact replacement from years earlier. I replaced my battery as a little paranoia set in just before a remote adventure in Alaska. Curious if the AGM type battery has anything to do with added amperage draw. The lone accessory is a Raymarine, Dragonfly Pro 7. Stabicraft 1410 Frontier wired for twin battery but only operating with one battery. Small battery selected to take advantage of the gunnel comb for uncluttered floor space, and balanced loading for single operator (captains kind of a big boy). This is the third AGL battery of that size that I've operated, second go this brand, previous brand was Interstate, same size. Hope to hear some sound technical insights. Thanks for your attention and feedback.

I am here to learn myself and I don't know anything about "AGL"
batteries other than the AI generated answer I just got after trying to look them up.

That came back as "AGL batteries are small, button shaped batteries used to power compact electronic devices".

So, you would need to educate me a bit further before I could venture a guess on this one.

"AGL". Sorry it's a typo. AGM is what I meant to type. I should have proof read better before I hit "post". My experience with AGM batteries is limited to my skiff. The idea was a smaller motorcycle battery to conserve weight and the anti spill properties of the AGM (Acid Glass Mat). My spring prelaunch prep included a battery charge and the battery never reached a "full" charge according to the charger/ analyzer. The charging voltage was holding at 15.6 volts, so I assumed an internal short and scrapped it. New battery seemed to be working okay until last day of multi day trip with fuse blowing 20 minutes out of small boat harbor. Electrical warning tripped, found blown fuse on shore. Checked voltage of battery and it was 11.5 v. On shore charge/analyzer battery ck's ok by green light and 13.7 volts. It remains a mystery to me

Hi,
I couldn't find a 30 amp fuse for a BF40A. I do see that the 40D model lists one.

Anyway, just my opinion but AGM batteries have been around for decades and are commonly used as substitutes for lead acid batteries. In addition, your own "empirical" experience using them with this set up is testimony to the "will it work?" answer. It does!

But, if as you say, the new battery is defective in some way then it's possible that it's causing this. Having it fully charged and load tested would be in order.

Other than that, a direct short to ground in the wiring somewhere would be my only other guess for this.

Sorry I can't provide a better answer.

Good luck and please let us know what you find.

Thanks jgmo. I appreciate your consideration and suggestions.Further battery test with harness inspect/test are in order. As I look at the "Mfgr's Cert. of Origin" you are correct with model designation BF40D. Certificate reads, date of mfg 2/2011, series BF40 DLHA. I'm uncertain where I can obtain an electrical schematic for this outboard as again I'm assuming the 30a fuse is for main bus/alternator protection.

Sorry, hit the buttons too soon before explaining.

The first link is for the genuine shop manual with easy to read, ACCURATE wiring diagrams and most other service information you're ever likely to need.

Also, be sure to check out the free download list as there are several for your model.

The second will get you a free download, from Honda, of the owners manual. They stopped including the wiring diagrams in those some time ago but, still, some very useful info to have handy.

Good luck.

Great info, Many Thanks jgmo, I ordered the shop manual this am. Its late in the season here in AK so the manual will support my over winter, on going, skiff development. Return my confidence in safe excursions off shore this next springs shrimping opener. Good Days, Good Times

Well, I hope you get it sorted out. Having the manual with wiring diagram should help immensely.

I did find a schematic for a 50D and it appears that the 30 amp fuse feeds the rectifier directly. So, I hope there's no issue with that or your alternator.

I always keep in mind that sometimes a fuse will "blow" but a cause can't always be found. Of course, if it does it more than once, then you'll need to go hunting.

Wishing you the best of luck and I do hope that you'll update with your results.

Good fishing!
