"ok here's a new one for e

"ok here's a new one for everyone, coming home from offshore noticed volt meter on port motor running low. VHF stated low battery, alarm goes off on port motor. I turn motor off it resets alarm run aways horn goes off again. This time motor has a slow crank as if Battery is dead ? limped back with one motor, I plan on taking both batterys to get them load tested BUT was curious if anyone thinks alarm on motor would be caused by low voltage from battery ?"
 
"Yes - low battery can signal

"Yes - low battery can signal one of two things -

(1) If "abnormal PGM-FI". It's a long intermittent alarm. In that case Green oil pressure light will be ON, red overheat light will be OFF, red MIL light will be ON and red alternator light will be OFF.
(2) If alternator it will also be a long intermittent alarm. In that case Green oil pressure light will be ON, red overheat light will be OFF, red MIL light will be OFF, and red alternator light will be ON.

Test the alternator on your port engine and reset the ECM."

Took batteries to local auto store to get load test they said one was 4% charge and other was 27% charge so I took back home putting them on charger over night then take back to see if they are taking a charge, If that doesn't work will head towards alternator, I figure its like a car and will take off and bring that to get tested and see if that is charging. I am noy 100% sure which light was on I think it was bottom one so if battery load test works guess it must be Alternator !!! Thanks for help I almost forgot about alternator I was so focused on Battery's

Friend that was with me remembered that it was the mil light for motor so leading more to the alternator so going to plan on checking that also after battery's load tests.

"Aristakat - That's a much different set up than I have. I have a four-light system at each key-switch - oil pressure, overheat, PGM-FI, and alternator. When were your engines installed? Shop manual for your year engine should tell you how to use lights to diagnose problem."

It wouldn't surprise me if that was case for lights(mil), read up on alternator and the top light is for alternator bottom one is something different . Load test shows one battery bad...."

"If it were me, I'd want to know if the charging system is working BEFORE I took it out.

Do you own a digital multi-meter? If not, it's a good tool to have and know how to use on a boat.

Inexpensive, pocket sized, consumer grade models are available at Radio Shack and other electronics outlets.

Having one would have already saved you hours of guessing."
