Honda BF150 short block info?

I have a Honda BF150 (2004) on a Hurricane Deck. I bought it used, but less than 300 hours on the motor. It has ran well all summer. After a day of boating, it wouldn't go into reverse when we were trying to dock at the end of the day. The mechanic I took it to told me that it is going to need a new short block or a whole new engine. I was surprised because other than reverse, it runs great. He says the '...thrust washer wore out and fell out and landed down in the gears... Because the washer must have been getting loose ,there is going to be a lot of wear on pistons, etc...'

Price quoted for the block is $3100, after installation bill is $5300.

Anyone out there with washer issues or knowledge of?

There have been 150s too tho not as many. There is a revised thrust washer fix that comes with the new short motors

I am suspicious! Why in the world would a failed thrust bearing on a BF 150 cause it to not go into reverse?

A second opinion is definitely worthwhile.

The 150 has a gear mechanism just under the oil pump to transfer motion to the shift shaft, that is gear the mechanic is referring to, just ask to see the piece of thrust washer
