My counter rotating motor has had a stutter for some time. Well yesterday it got way worse. Took off and it was having trouble even getting up to 4200 rpms. Then all the sudden the overheat alarm goes off. New impeller and t-stats already installed. I backed it off and restarted it and the alarm went off. I noticed steam when i stopped from it over heating. Ended up running back and scrapped my swordfish run. I was doing some deep dropping and when i moved from spot to spot it would struggle and stutter any where from 1000-3000 rpms. I emptied the accumulator and filter bowls just incase it was water. Racor was clean. When i made it back in it was having trouble just going wake speed and seems to want to stall ,but didn't.
I pulled the plugs today and they looked ok. I drained the lower unit fluid and while it was black no milkiness to it. I heard that when a lower unit goes bad it can make the engine overheat. There was a pretty good amount of metal shavings on the magnet. I just changed the oil on it last month.
What else should i check?
