Honda BF150 problems

My counter rotating motor has had a stutter for some time. Well yesterday it got way worse. Took off and it was having trouble even getting up to 4200 rpms. Then all the sudden the overheat alarm goes off. New impeller and t-stats already installed. I backed it off and restarted it and the alarm went off. I noticed steam when i stopped from it over heating. Ended up running back and scrapped my swordfish run. I was doing some deep dropping and when i moved from spot to spot it would struggle and stutter any where from 1000-3000 rpms. I emptied the accumulator and filter bowls just incase it was water. Racor was clean. When i made it back in it was having trouble just going wake speed and seems to want to stall ,but didn't.

I pulled the plugs today and they looked ok. I drained the lower unit fluid and while it was black no milkiness to it. I heard that when a lower unit goes bad it can make the engine overheat. There was a pretty good amount of metal shavings on the magnet. I just changed the oil on it last month.

What else should i check?

Edit: The warning beep i got was long intermittent beeps.(confirmed with the wife)I thought it was a constant buzzer. So maybe an alternator problem?
Would that cause low rpms and stutter?

Do you have the 4-light key switch or the two light key-switch? The alarm just you that something is wrong the alarm and lights combined tell you were to look. So, what lights came on when the alarm sounded?

The steam coming out doesn't really tell you anything because of simple temperature changes in a high humidity environment will produce steam. You need to feel the temperature of the water coming from the telltale, which is normally fairly hot but not scalding. If that checks out, feel the heads while engine is running. You should be able to hold your hand on them for at least a second or two before it becomes too hot.

One other thing - pull the prop and make sure it is not hanging up on fishing line or anything else that could be impeding it's rotation.

The beeps were long intermittent beeps. I checked and that is a alternator code? I have the 4 lights but they are not working. I have had an overheat alarm before and it is a constant buzzer. So could the alternator cause a stutter? Nothing is in the props.

I don't know about the 150, but on the 225 long intermittent beeps indicate a problem with EITER the programmed fuel injection system or the Alternator. You need to pull the fault codes off the ECM. Not sure how to do that on the 150.

Well crap repair shop said 2 weeks for a simple code read. He did mention that it could be OX2 sensor. They expensive or hard to change? I have tuna to kill...

They are expensive - $220 on boats.net. Not difficult to change out. If memory serves me right, they also require a special wrench to remove, but I may be thinking of another motor. That's an expensive R&R if that is not your problem. Search this forum on how to pull the fault codes on the 150. I know Hondadude wrote it up. I think it's a bit different from the 225.

Update : I changed the high pressure and low pressure fuel filters on the motor. The high pressure was black. So i imagine that is not good. Cleaned the VST (Not dirty) and changed spark plugs. Pulled off alternator belt and the alternator spun freely. Would the filter being clogged give me this alarm? I will say this motor has been thru 3 high PSI pumps and has always been a PIA! I had a water intrusion problem and that cause a bit of trouble years ago. No water in the raccors now.

I'm going to assume that the 150 is not that different from the 225 that I have. The clogged HP filter alone typically does not set off an alarm, but if it is causing a misfire, that will set off the alarm indicating a fault with the programmed fuel injection system, which I think is the alarm you are getting.

Again, search this forum to find the procedure for getting and clearing the fault codes on the 150. Clear the codes. Run the engine and check for alarms and new codes.

Update: Ran it tonight no alarms. No problems idling (No wake speed) It did however have a stutter at 4200 rpms(cruising speed) Bumped it up to 5000 and it didn't do it.
What else could be going on? Fuel pump?

I'd try to pull codes again to see if you can pinpoint what is causing the stutter. Usually a fuel pump problem will show up at high speed or low speed.

Update: Ran it again yesterday had a slight stutter at 4200 rpms. Then bumped it up to 5k stutter intermittently (same as 4200). Ran all day and was heading in started stuttering and then alarm came back on. Turned it off started up again and putted back to the dock.(no alarm) From what i read the intermittent beep alarm is the alternator. I really hate the fact i only have 2 honda repair shops near me. One the guy is nothing but a parts hanger and the other is too busy. Uhg… I didn't have any problems idling all day.

Without your 4 warning lights working, we are just guessing at the answer to the problem.

I would work on getting them working first. Then you can either check for codes yourself.

Check all the connections going to the lights and check the 6 pin connector at the engine side of the wiring harness. Since none of them work, the problem may be under the console. Two of them connect through one part of the wiring harness and the other two connect through the other part.
