My 02 Honda 225 had bad lower unit gears. Was quoted by the Honda certified dealer $900 for parts and 14 hrs labor @75 per. Ouch! but I said OK. Went to pick up the boat today and they said the labor was 27 hrs ($1000 more). I was pissed!!! How many hrs
does it take?! I think I'm being totally screwed! Am I wrong?.. Any thoughts??

Sounds like the shop needs better set-up tools and more training on how to set up gear fits and backlash. Contact HONDA and mention this, you may get some refund.

In my experience, 27 hours (for differnt outboards - not Honda) is entirely too long for a trained mechanic. Even 14 hours sounds a bit on the long side.

Well, $2850 for a shined up broke one or, you might want to ask them why you didn't just get one for $2700 and change plus shipping and just bolt it on yourself. It even comes with new gear oil.

They are pretty much ripping you off in my opinion. Check out the link below. Might not be 100% applicable to your serial but a dollar to a doughnut says it's pretty damn close.

I would politely ask them to adjust the price to AT LEAST the quoted labor agreed to initially and give me back my boat. You could print this correspondence and the boats.net parts price and show it to them. That might sway them along with a commitment that you will pursue the issue against them in small claims court. There, they will be forced to produce their version of what they used for SHOP RATE FLAG HOURS for this repair and their reasons for for so blatantly exceeding them.

if you have insurance, use it
if not time to get it
boat us is one of the best
1 customer tried to take me said i did this and that, when i never touched the port motor!!
boat us came after me, i talked to them, then they went after him, LOL

Just an update... Took all your replies back to the dealer and they agreed to the originally quoted price... Saved me $1000... Thanks for all your help... DBA
