HONDA 9.9 BF9.9D3 XHSA DRIVESHAFT SEAL REPLACEMENT

I have the subject motor. The driveshaft seal(s) below the water impeller are leaking badly and need to be replaced. When I try to remove the large housing that the seals are in I can only get it up about 3/4 inches. I want to slide it up the driveshaft to remove it and easily get to the seal(S). It goes up about 3/4 inches then makes a metal on metal click. I "think" its the bearing hitting something?? Do I get a slide hammer and pull it off that way or what? It is the extra long shaft model.

Hi,
NO! Don't use a slide hammer or force of any kind or you will regret it. It will probably never shift again if you try that.

Honda calls that piece the "water pump housing" for some reason but it's really the base of the housing.

Sadly, in order to remove it, it is necessary to remove the propshaft holder with transmission and then remove the bevel gear and then slide the mainshaft out.

The main reason for this misery is that the shift shaft is being held by a pin to the underside of that piece or "housing".
The little "shoe" (Honda calls it a "pushrod") that selects the gears is pinned to the bottom of that shift shaft and is catching down there. That's the metal "thunk" you are hearing.

Once the transmission is removed you might be able to manipulate the shift shaft and shoe enough to slide the thing up but I believe you'll find that it won't slide up off of the mainshaft because the shaft splines are too large.

I've only done it a few times and I don't have fond memories of the job. But....it's certainly do-able.

Sorry to be the one to give you the bad news.

Good luck.

This is a saltwater motor and no way can the prop shaft be removed. The shift shaft is not the problem. I can clearly see the pin you are talking about. The entire shift assembly would come out except I cannot lift the waterpump housing out. If I don't get any other input I will take it over to a Honda dealer and see what their mechanics say. Problem is that the Honda mechanics don't work on the lower HP models too often because of the high cost to get them repaired which can result in a bill higher than what the motor is worth!
