Honda 225 broken connecting Rod

Went out this weekend, 2004 24' Proline single outboard 2004 225 Honda. The motor has about 115hrs on it, never had any issues, always runs smooth. Was running at 5000k RPMs, boat was doing fine and without warning the motor thew a rod, broke the block. Any know issues with 2004/225s? The boat has always been well maintained, fresh oil, was not running hot, new thermostats. Motor still spins freely, the piston in the offending cylinder still moves freely when I oust it down with a screwdriver through the SP hole. No water in the cylinder, head gaskets seem fine, scoped the cylinder and cant see any damage, what the heck???
 
Well, a 2004 motor with only 115 hours is likely the problem. More specifically likely due to lack of oil on the rod bearing.

It's well known that the more the BF 225 is run, the better it runs. The USCG regularly puts 6000 hours on these engines. But they run them almost every day when they're not in for maintenance.

Yes, I agree. I had considered that as well. The thing thats weird is nothing is locked up, I even pull the plug on the offending cylinder and pushed the piston down with no effort. The engine still spins freely as well
 
Never in 20 years working on Hondas have I witnessed such catastrophic engine failure. I think on doing an autopsy that a bigend has failed. Oil drains away from components with long periods of no use, hence the use of special assembly lube in rebuilds
 
Actually Chawk, I did mean the big end has siezed and snapped off and is allowing the crank to turn freely because of this
