Honda 150 hp rpm's oscillating.

Hello everyone.
I had a few Hondas 150 hp over the years.
On two of them the rpm's oscillates around 1,000 rpm, up and down, when going between 2,500 to 4,000 rpm.
I did change the fuel pump and vapor separator module and nothing changed.
Any ideas of what causes this problem?
Thank you, Allois

Hi,
I know NOTHING about this particular model so just taking a GUESS.
Ok?

Many modern engines, including several Honda cars and outboards utilize a device inside the intake manifold (see link below) called an "air. runner control" or what Honda calls the "air bypass".

The air bypass is basically a moveable air "dam" inside the intake manifold to divert and change the quantity and velocity of air going into the cylinders at certain operating speeds. This action improves the way air mixes with fuel in the cylinders to improve performance and efficiency.

The "dam" component is typically made of a plastic arm or blade controlled by a vacuum diaphragm mounted on the exterior of the manifold.

This diaphragm is controlled on your particular model by an electric solenoid (item 16 in the link)

Your description of the surging occurring between 2500rpm and 4,000rpm is what makes me GUESS that the air bypass might be faulty.

Things that MIGHT go wrong with the air bypass:

The solenoid

The wiring to the solenoid.

The vacuum supply or control tubes (items 17 and 18)

The diaphragm (integral to the manifold and not sold separately)

Possibly any diaphragm linkage...I don't know. (this is all a GUESS remember!)

The dam arm or blade might be broken or has come loose inside the manifold. This is typically not accessible but might be seen with the manifold removed. At any rate, it would have to come with a new .manifold.

That's all I have.
If this isn't accurate I apologize.
Just tossing it up since no one else has answered you yet.

Good luck.

Thanks a lot for all the information.
I will start the elimination process.
We live in Pohnpei, Micronesia.
Not much of a Honda dealer here but we have done well.
Thank you. Allois

I was truly amazed about the story of Nan Madol and the basalt stone structures. Maybe someday the mystery of how they were made will be revealed but not in my lifetime I'm afraid.

Forgot to mention that, if the air dam is loose or broken, it might make clicking, "clacking" or rattling noises.

Please update your post if/when you figure out the problem.

Yes, easy to replace, it's on top of the exhaust manifold. You will need a 22mm O2 sensor socket, it's a deep socket with a cut out

Before you do that, check your fuel pressure, a blocked high pressure filter or high pressure pump pick up screen could also cause this. You are not very clear with your symptom. If rpm is steady at full throttle, then O2 sensor, if you rpm fluctuation is at full throttle then more likely a fuel pressure drop

Lazy O2 sensor will cause this. I'm assuming it's fine over 4000rpm
Would it be this sensor? Part 16 on the diagram?

Also, I just changes the entire module with the fuel pump and vapor separator and nothing changed. Thanks.
