Gears clashing

Hello, new to this forum. I have a 2023 Honda 90 that has maybe 50 hours on it. I covered it for the winter and because of health issue.
Opened it up, hooked up the hose and warmed it up in neutral. I tried putting it in gear and it did go. F and R. But crunching metal when in engaged the gears. Shut it right down. Any opinions are greatly appreciated.

What was the temperature at the time? I ask because, if freezing or below and there was some ice inside, that might cause this. Other than something like that, the only thing that comes to mind is that you may want to take the prop off and see if something got jammed in behind it.

Critters do some bizarre stuff to outboards while they sit in storage.

If you can't see anything obvious then I recommend draining the gear lube and inspecting it after letting it sit for a time to allow for separation to occur.

Hopefully someone else here has some better ideas.

Good luck.

Your rpm's need to be around 600 +/- 50 for any of these bigger Honda's to shift smoothly. Did you check that? Sometimes it just needs to warm up before the idle rpm's settle down.

If still a problem follow JGMO's advice.

If still a problem you will need to check your shifter linkage. I don't have enough experience with this engine to give good advice on that issue.
