would like to know how much clearence(play}is ok for upper driveshaft&pinion gear on 1973 evinrude 85hp. v4-can wiggle back and forth what looks like a pretty good bit, mech. most of life but not on boats, anynhelp will be appreciated-thanks to anyone.

Use a dial indicator and ~ 0.002" would be OK.----------Just remove the upper bearing housing and a visual of the shaft and bearing and upper thrust bearing will tell the story.

Are you talking about gearlash that would be up and down movement of the driveshaft or are you talking about side to side with the upper bearing housing in place? Are you getting metal shavings in the gearoil when you drain it?

They feel pretty sloppy but need special tool/s to check properly.....

the splines on the driveshaft looks good, new gear it seems to have a good bit of side to side play, shaft is beveled &doesnt stop until a lot of torque.the up & down play on shaft is preset outside of housing gauges from top of gear lip,to top shim with gauge i couldnt find a gauge- straight edge with lip on bottom for that model.it was in a barn for several years,i wanted to go thrue everything before using the pinion gear is all i found wore it was not very bad but replacing it anyway,am dissabled and dont want any problems on the water.it may be ok i wanted to be sure, most of things i worked on most splines fit prety snug-thanks for replying tim

this one you measure outside the housing with a gauge like a straight edge w/a lip on one end. fromthe gear lip to the top shim, then put it back in,i couldnt find the right gauge tool for that model i found an assortment pack w/no info on it and they dont give them awayeither.thank you for the reply, tim

tiis one uses a gauge you take it out and measure it from the lip on top of gear to top shim, gauge tool looks like a straight edge w/ a lip on one end, then put it back in. pinion gear was worn just enough to replace while i was in there. the boat was in a barn for years,so im going over it pretty good,am dissabled and dont want any surprises ya know. thanks for your reply, tim
