<br>They feel pretty sloppy but need special tool/s to check properly.....
this one you measure outside the housing with a gauge like a straight edge w/a lip on one end. fromthe gear lip to the top shim, then put it back in,i couldnt find the right gauge tool for that model i found an assortment pack w/no info on it and they dont give them awayeither.thank you for the reply, timUse a dial indicator and ~ 0.002" would be OK.----------Just remove the upper bearing housing and a visual of the shaft and bearing and upper thrust bearing will tell the story.
tiis one uses a gauge you take it out and measure it from the lip on top of gear to top shim, gauge tool looks like a straight edge w/ a lip on one end, then put it back in. pinion gear was worn just enough to replace while i was in there. the boat was in a barn for years,so im going over it pretty good,am dissabled and dont want any surprises ya know. thanks for your reply, timAre you talking about gearlash that would be up and down movement of the driveshaft or are you talking about side to side with the upper bearing housing in place? Are you getting metal shavings in the gearoil when you drain it?
