BF60A Hot start issues

First off, I had similar issues last year and over the winter I replaced the fuel pump grommet, which was blocking flow, I'm the one who made the Youtube video of it.
So I had my boat out on the water all last week and it worked decent, as the week progressed it took a few more tries to get started here and there. Finally by the end of the week it would not start after it was hot, next morning after cooling off it would start but only once for that day. After research I think its the high pressure fuel pump, I plan to change that and also the fuel pump relay. Does anyone else have any suggestions? Its hard to diagnose because it needs to be running for a while to get hot, I can't really do that in my driveway since I cant get any load on it. I figure if I'm taking the whole VST apart again I'd want to cover all angles if I could this time around. I have also read to use only Honda pumps, which I plan to purchase.
I have already changed all fuel hoses from the fuel tank to the engine including a new squeeze ball, I did that with the grommet in winter.

Hi,

You may very well be right about the fuel pump. It could have been stressed to the point of failure when that grommet was blocking flow.
You're definitely right about using a Honda pump only as many here have reported no success with alternative brands.

But heat can also effect electrical connectors and components and cause the same symptoms. Before shelling out $300+ dollars and disassembling the VST to swap ot the pump on a hunch, you might consider cleaning the white wire connectors at the starter. One of those wires feeds the main relay or what you're calling the fuel pump relay.

You might also try applying heat to that relay with a heat gun or hair dryer to see if you can duplicate the fault. If so, it's only $45+ to replace and a lot less hassle.

Just a thought.

Good luck.

@jgmo, thanks for the info, I'll check the relay and wire. I read on another thread with similar issues but to check the fuel cooler, does my 60 also have that? figure if I'm in the VST I'll try clean the fuel cooler lines at the same time.

Yes,
See item 9 in link. I thought about the fuel cooler too but didn't mention it because my experience with these outboards is pretty much zero and I hesitate to send you in too many directions at once. That and you say the problem is heat related and I don't know if a partially plugged cooler would do that.

But....if you're going in the VST at some point it certainly makes sense to make sure it's clean.

Also, as to my suggestion about using a heat gun to "stress" suspect components, it's a tried and true technique that is used in automotive repair. BUT...do so with caution as overheating a component could cause damage.
