97 bf90a bbbl-1002989 electric choke solenoid

This is a new to me motor, Boat seemed hard to get on plain. Once on plain runs great on the water.
Put on the hose to flush and was having a hard time getting it to start. Pulled cover and noticed electric choke was pulled in. Pulled down on choke linkage that connects all the carbs and motor fired right up. hit the choke switch to see what happened and it pulls the plunger in but it does not release the choke when the switch is released.
My question is- is there a spring in the solenoid that pushes it back or a spring on the linkage connected to the card that would open the butterflies back open?

I honestly don't know. I've never worked on a 90A model.

But looking in my Honda Marine Carburetion Manual I see graphics of the BG carburetors for that outboard as having a wind-up type spring attached to the choke butterfly shafts and are likely intended to hold the choke open anytime the solenoid is de-energized.

Those springs are integral to the carb main body and were never sold separately.

However, It's my guess they aren't broken and that this is simply a friction problem of some sort.

You might try spraying the choke valve shafts with
PB-Blaster and also making sure that the actuator link...item 17 in the parts page link below....is not rubbing or hanging up on anything.


In addition to that, you will want to inspect and lubricate the choke linkage in the link below....
...Items 4, 5, and 23.

And, make sure that items 7 and 16 aren't rubbing or binding on anything.


We just had a case here where the owner reported that he had throttle problems on a very similar set up (BF 130 I believe) and solved it when he found the linkage rubbing and binding.

Bottom carb on the early 90 hp used to have problems with corrosion of the choke butterly spindle causing the issue you're having. Sometimes you need to replace that carb if it's bad enough.
 
Thanks for the replies I am going to mess with it a little bit later this afternoon hopefully it's just a lubrication issue and something sticking.
 
Disconnected the bar that connects the choke on all carbs, I'm assuming carb 1 is at top and 4 at the bottom. #2 butterfly will not open back on its own. Gets stuck just at closed. #1#3#4 work properly. Currently left the bar off all since it's hot and I really don't need the choke. Sprayed with PB blaster. If this doesn't eat away the corrosion is it possible to remove air box without taking the carbs off also? Have ordered parts to Clean carbs but other than this it is running fine so I hate to pull everything off.
 
You cannot pull the box off on its own, there's an inaccessible bolt behind it. It's a simple procedure to remove the intake complete with carb assemblies
