2008 BF200 with irritating noise

Motor runs great but has a fairly high pitched metallic ringing/jingling/tinny noise above 3400 RPM. The noise is significantly amplified by the top set and side curtains to the point of discomfort. Resorted to earplugs at the end of the season.

Bought the boat & motor, 2008 Lund 1900 Pro V, two years ago with 93 hours on it and now have 500. Made the noise from the get go. Lower unit has been disassembled and inspected and shows no sign of wear or damage. Lower unit had been apart before I bought it.

Some friends don't complain about it but others sure do. No one can identify the source.

Any one have any ideas. Thanks.

What year is the motor? What is the SN?

The older models - earlier than the middle of 2007 - have a problem with the mid-shaft bushing. It doesn't get sufficient cooling water and can fail. If not attended to early on, it can actually eat through the lower cowling.

Here is a link to a very good video on the procedure: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=44ZaDzNck1I

Good video. Will pull the lower unit in the next week or so and have a look. Is the bushing issue related to running in salt water? Can't do any water testing for a while. We're in the hard water season in Wisconsin.

Salt water doesn't help Flushing after every use is highly recommended and pulling lower unit buffing midshaft and regreasing every year is not spelled out in owners manual, A lot of Susukis had the same issues

Johnnygjr: Nothing in my paper work states the model year of the motor, just the serial #. Since the package is labeled as 2008, my motor could easily fall in the group you mentioned. Thanks for the lead.

Based on your SN, your motor was probably manufactured somewhere around mid-year, 2007. My SN is slightly higher (1500767) and the dealer said it was manufactured in the fall of 2007. They enlarged the opening for lubricating that bushing sometime around mid-2007. So you may or may not have the upgraded bushing. Either way, it should be thoroughly checked and lubricated, or replaced if needed.

FYI - I have over 1900 hours on my engine, all saltwater, and have had no problems with that bushing. But I inspect it thoroughly during every water pump/impeller change. I also thoroughly flush the engine with freshwater after every use. Being in Wisconsin, running in fresh water, I suspect you don't have that issue.

So far, we are all assuming that the high pitch scream is due to that bushing. If it is not, then I'm not sure where else you should look. But you will need to have someone run the boat with the cowling off and see if you can pinpoint the source. The two things that come to mind are the alternator bearing and the cam belt tensioner bearing. There have been some reports of that tensioner bearing failing with catastrophic results, so that would be very important to check.

Ooooo-eeeee! That tensioner! Like chawk says....CATASTROPHIC! I think most of us here have read of the cases where that thing failed and the engine jumped time at high rpms. NOT GOOD! If you have any doubts at all about it's condition you should seriously consider a new tensioner and belt as CHEAP INSURANCE.

Good luck.

Something else I remember about reading concerning the tensioner failure was that the owner reported that it looked fine when in place. Only when removed and turned over could you plainly see the corrosion and damage that caused the thing to break.

He included photos too, as I recal,l as a warning to anyone that suspects a problem there.

chawk_man: Removedthe lower unit yesterday. The bushing had just a bit of grease and was ever so slightlyscored, so I removed it. No part numberon the bushing. The bronze part is 1 3/16"tall and the rubber part is 1 1/2" tall.

I've explored Honda's Parts Finder and see only one partnumber, 40210-ZY3-610, and it is listed for all long & extra-long shaft modelsfrom Ser. # 10000001- 999999999. Do youhave the part number for the upgraded bushing referenced in you note?

There are a few rings cut into the face on the shaft.
The fingernail barely catches in them. Could this be desirable since they could holdextra grease?

Installed two temperature sensors and two gauges per yourguidance. Thanks for the help.

Tensioner bearing inspection up nextafter the lower unit is back together.

Madison,

According to that video parts numbers are...

• Bushing = 40210-ZY3-610 – (Vertical shaft bearing)
• C ring = 9052-ZY3-000
• Flat washer = 9053-ZY3-610
• You’ll also need a pair of snap ring pliers.

FYI - had to go away from home for extended period and won't return until just before the opening of trophy rock season on the Chesapeake. So hauled my boat down to the dealer and told him to do several things, including replace the cam belt and tensioner. I figured after 2000 hours, it was good insurance to do it whether it needed it or not. Laundry list also included a new water pump and inspection of the mid-shaft bearing.
