2006 BF135A keeps blowing 10A fuse

This problem started by simply turning the key on at the boat ramp on my Honda BF135A and poof no power, so far I have replaced the Ignition switch, switch harness, PGM-FI main relay, inspected all grounds, took all wires off batteries except main power and ground, batteries are charged. I have read in other forums that the trim tilt relay may be causing this short to ground but if I replace the 10A fuse the tilt function works fine on the remote handle and on the engine. Only when I turn the key to ON position does the fuse blow. Any help is appreciated John</p>

Noteworthy maybe, is that fuse COULD also be supplying power to the engine instruments on the dash panel (e.g. tilt ga, tach, etc). Just a thought.....

Alan makes a good point. This is likely a short to ground either in the dash or inside the remote control itself. Try to follow the wire that the fuse feeds and you might be able to break into the circuit at each connection point you can locate. I use a homemade jumper wire at connections that I put a fuse holder in to "bridge" those connections one at a time. Use a 1 or 2 amp fuse in the jumper wire holder so that it will pop before the 10 amp blows. It's just a matter of hunting the short down in a process of elimination until the jumper fuse doesn't blow. You can buy a bunch of "test fuses" online for cheap.

An easier way to find a short is with a thermal imaging camera if you have access to one. The wiring will often get a significant temperature spike at the point of the short that will show up on the camera. Flir makes a decent camera that attaches to a smart phone for about $200 but a really good one is more like $500.

Good luck.

Forgot to mention....please resist any temptation to use a higher amperage fuse to test with or, worse, to "bypass" the problem altogether. Doing that usually only ends in a fire and regret.

Most folks know this, some don't.

Good luck.....again.

It might be easier, depending on your install, to just disconnect the harness leading to those dash guages for troubleshooting purposes. -Al

In my old cars to find a short I’ve used a 12v taillight 2 wire pigtail and bulb to take the place of a fuse, attach a wire to each side of the fuse post and with a short, the bulb will stay lit until you find the short. Wire it up with wires long enough so the bulb can be seen where you are searching. I use alligator clips on the old glass tube type fuse end clips. Saves a lot of changing blown fuses while searching.

You can take that a step further too. Something I used to do looking for parasitic drains. You take the light bulb set up (or a 12v test light), and hook it up between one of the battery cables you've removed, and the battery. Then go to the fuse panel and pull one fuse at a time until that light goes out - identifying the circuit with the draw.....

It is a fairly common thing for incorrect connection of the black/yellow for the backlighting to be incorrectly connected to a black or ground. This will cause your problem.

UPDATE - 03/04/2023 - I replaced the wiring harness from the engine forward to the side control box, short is gone and everything works as it should. Thank you for all the input.
