Going to do one on a friends 2002 but have no shop manual. Is intake 0.13-0.17mm and 0.21-0.25 mm exhaust correct for clearances?

Done cold, choke and throttle wide open, all 3 plugs out, rotate counterclockwise, any other advice appreciated.

I should add, I’ve never touched this outboard, it’s on a pontoon and sees maybe 30-50 hours usage annually and infrequent maintenance.

I drained the oil and gear box, when draining the oil, it appeared thin. I had not checked the dipstick before draining it, so not sure if it had gas in it, the gear oil was very black, so no leaks there.

I asked the owner how easy it was to start, said slow to start cold, starts and runs fine once warmed up. The plugs were not real bad, but being replaced.

I thought it was likely time to check the valves.

Hi
Never worked on one.
I agree with checking/adjusting valves.
The slow starting cold could be compression related but you might also look into choke operation. It has a solenoid that could get."weak" and not close it properly plus there's a bit of linkage involved that could affect closing. No knowledge of any adjusting you could do though.

Are you sure about cow rotation? Most Hondas turn clockwise but I don't know....just asking.

Good luck

Jgmo, it has an arrow on top of the pulley with the direction of rotation as counter clockwise. And thanks for the advice.

Fitz, I’ve worked on my own Honda 130 which I have a manual for, I’ve also worked on my other outboards, and felt confident on working on this outboard for a friend. I’m also curious about mechanical things and enjoy figuring things out, so I’ve worked on many other things, like a 2007 Mini Cooper, 2015 VW turbo, 2013 Honda CRV, compared to modern cars these outboards are very simple. The wiring diagrams for my 10 year old VW are 1362 pages. I’m also cautious, if I can’t figure it out, I don’t touch it.

All the valves were tight. Put the complete new impeller kit in it, found some salt, looked like sea salt with some spice added.

Looks like that could go right on your salad!

Doesn't seem to be any signs of corrosion though.

He must keep up with his zincs.

That just means that they've been doing their job. "Sacraficial anode" says it all.

As an aside, it always kills me when I see the little ground bonding strap used for the power trim units rotted in half or, worse yet, completely removed because people don't know what they do and, thus, don't think they have any importance.

I don't think enough emphasis is put on those or maintenance of the zincs in the OEM literature.

I have a Honda 50 hp outboard motor. It run fine, got out on the lake and it shut down found that the water pump was not working. I put a new pump on and it will not start. I don't know anything about boat motors, do you have to do something after it shuts down?

They spin counter because they have a gear drive off the crank to the drive shaft like Suzuki do in order to set the powerhead forward of the drive shaft :)

You should start your own thread.

Papamarty,
Welcome new member!
But, I agree with NSDON. You need to start your own thread about your issue. And,.you will get many more people reading about your problem if you do.
Good luck.
