I've been away awhile. Update on the Stamas 288 x twin 225 project.

Hey Guys........I've only been making incremental progress because of work, so I have been absent. I was the one with the really ugly comp numbers on one motor. The boat is finally back on the water and doing well. Here is some info that may be of interest to someone. It turned out the valves...

Made a mistake putting the heads back on my 225. Help!

Howdy Guys.......between vacation and other things, it has taken me a month to get back on this job. I got the heads back on and torqued, but I didn't get to finish the angle torque for lack of a 3/8-1/2 adaptor. So torquing isn't quite done. Maybe this will save my bacon. What I did wrong...

Can I reuse head bolts? 225.

Hey Guys....I was planning to start reassembling my motors/heads tomorrow, but then I realized the new head bolts that I ordered aren't here. According to tracking, the box was left in our mailbox while we were gone, and apparently someone raided it. No box, no headbolts. Argghh!! That's $140...

    Accessing crankshaft on 225?

Howdy......I can't find a definitive answer either in my Honda manual or in the diagrams at honda.com. I want to know if I can get the crankcase cover off, so I can access the crankshaft, bearings, pistons, etc, without having to remove either the mount case or the oil pan. If I can, then I...

Really bad compression #'s on one of my 225's.

As some of you may know, I bought these used with approx 850 hrs. I've been going through everything to bring them back up to spec. The final thing to do was to get a compression baseline. The port motor was: 1-185 2-185 3-185 4-184 5-184 6-175 The starting batteries are mid-life 500 CCA, so...

Need help replacing timing belt & aligning marks. 225

Howdy.....after Skooter posted his worn out, rusted idler pulley I decided to check mine. Little did I know that what I thought would be a simple job, ended up with me dropping everything after 4 hrs and walking away......before I had a meltdown. Very aggravating. As soon as I loosened the...

The codes won't clear on one of my 225's. Ideas?

Howdy.......my port motor cleared with one try. But I tried 2 dozen times on the stb and no go. Any suggestions on what to look at?

Could a tight exhaust valve be related to a super-heated coil? 225.

I finished adjusting the valves today on the twin 225's. Both motors were consistent except for one exhaust valve on #6. All 24 intake valves were slightly loose @ approx 0.26mm, and all but 1 exhaust valves were dead on @ approx 0.30mm. I adjusted the intakes to 0.21. The one exhaust valve on...

Any measureable effect to loose intake valves? '04 x 225's

I finished the RingFree decarb yesterday before the adjustment today. These motors have approx 850 hrs on them, and I have no way to know if the valves have ever been adjusted. Maybe, maybe not. I've only finished adjusting the valves on one motor. I'm not entirely slow, and yet it still took...

Is there an easier way to test O2 sensors than the book description.

A mechanic told me a few weeks ago that there was a simple way to test O2 sensors with ohms and/or volts. But I can't remember exactly what he said. Is there? The manual is confusing. Maybe I just have to re-read it a few times. Age does that!? 'o4 x 225's

Two different numbers for spark plug tube seal. Either/or?

The other day when I found the bad spark plug in #2 cyl, I also had oil in that tube. My mechanic says it's just the tube seal inside the valve cover. I went ahead and ran the motors up to 6200 and 5900 as I stated in another thread. Today I checked again, and I have oil in that tube again. So...

Big improvement after Ringfree and spark plug change, twin 225's. Stamas 288 Liberty.

As some of you may know, I've been slowly bringing these used '04 motors I bought up to spec. I've chased some confusing issues along the way that confounded me, but I nearly have them running correctly now. I have only run 7gals of the 40:1 RF shock treatment. I had intended to run 12gals, and...

New # for exhaust kit. Is it the same? '04 225's.

Ok, I'm going to do it. PartsPak has them for $98. They are listing 04101-zy3-010 as the replacement number for 04101-zy3-000. Anyone know about it?

Should I use RingFree or Seafoam for decarbing?

Threads say they do the same thing, but they are based on different chemicals. Seafoam I believe is naptha-based, while RingFree is Techron. Are there advantages/disadvantages using one or the other? If I use Seafoam I'm going with 5:1. If I use RingFree, which is very concentrated, I'm going...

I prevented a potential boat fire today.

I was going to begin the process of decarbing my 225's today. The plan was to draw a RingFree mix out of a 2.5 gal container and run into the motors briefly and then let them sit overnight. I decided to empty the twin Racors, replace them, and then use the primer bulbs to fill them. This way the...

Why change oil after a decarb?

I'm asking this as an academic question so I can understand what's going on inside the motor. I assume the reason for changing the oil is because the motor oil becomes contaminated with Seafoam (thinned petroleum distillates) and dissolved carbon. But the only way for this stuff to get into the...

    I've been told I have a bad ecm, 225. But do I?

Howdy......this is a continuation of the below topic/thread, but since it is now going in a different direction, I thought I'd start another one. So I thought it would be straight-forward: replace the coil and plug and go. Not quite. We put another coil and plug in, started the motor, and it...

Anyone ever have a badly stuck coil on a 225?

I didn't have any luck searching for this problem, but then again, I find the search feature here difficult to use at times. So here goes..... I had a miss on '04 225 at idle. We popped off each plug wire and found the culprit was the lower port side (#3?). Then we went to remove the coil to...

    Troubleshooting under-revving 225's?

Wow, I haven't been to the forum for months. January thru Sept is busy time for me. I have hardly been able to work on the boat at all. Today I finally got it (Stamas 288) on the water and ran it for a couple hours, about half the time at WOT. Both motors turned 5000rpms @ 35mph. That's it! Is...

How to troubleshoot tilt/trim sensors and gauges?

Hey Guys......the rehab continues with the Stamas. Took it for the maiden trial run the other day and it ran out nice, except for being stern heavy with those beast Hondas. That's my upcoming foam project. But for now, I'm trying to figure out why neither trim gauges are working. They haven't...
