    Early 60's ignition points.....Unavailable. Options?

I have a 1961 Mercury 500 outboard. It uses a breaker point PN 393-1504A11 and a few other similar part numbers. ALL are NLA, and even the Ebay searches are fruitless. I called the "Vintage Mercury Outboard" repair business from Wisconsin (they specialize in fully restoring every nut and bolt in...

    1961 mercury 500 cooling question

When running in barrel, there is a little bit of water pulsing out of top of exhaust housing (mid section, centered, straight below carburetors and lower cowl pan) hitting the transom clamp unit, there's a bit of an opening there. Just wondering if this is normal? Pumps water good otherwise out...

1994 50 hp Evinrude link and sync question

I found a couple youtube videos on this subject that answer most of my questions, but what i'm wondering is if Johnson/Evinrude 40/50hp models are all the same from say 1989-1994 as far as linkage measurements. The anomaly i'm running into is the spark advance linkage won't adjust down to the 2...

40 hp Mariner magnum...having trouble identifying year/model number

The serial number is 0d060829...every time I look it up, I come up empty handed. Not sure if those are zeros or letter O's in the serial number, or a combination of both. I've tried typing it in a number of ways. I just need the year and model number so I can order a new impeller kit for it. Thanks.

    Stator wiring question....

So I'm rewiring a 17ft smokercraft with an 84 evinrude, 50 hp. Mice and coons went to town on it. My question is, does the stator (more specifically, the re-charge circuit) use a different set of leads going back to the battery for recharging while running, or does it have a setup that backfeeds...

50 hp evinrude shift rod/linkage height specs...?

Rebuilding a 1984 50 hp evinrude (E50TLCRM) and I'm wondering if anyone knows the height the pin hole at the top of the rod is supposed to measure (be adjusted) from a given point on the lower unit?... And also what shift position (forward, neutral, or reverse) this spec is relative to?

    Circlip/retainer clip orientation question...

I'm reassembling a Evinrude lower unit (1984 50 hp) It has 2 circlips between the bearing carrier and bolt plate. I see some folks talking about the sharp and rounded edges on these, and which way they have to face, but I'm getting mixed answers....can anyone tell me the correct positioning for...

    Reverse gear needle bearing....Direction sensitive?

I'm reassembling a lower unit on an 84 evinrude. The reverse gear has a needle bearing assembly that rides on the machined surface on the back of the gear, and is sandwiched by a precision plate and bearing carrier. I lost track of which way it was oriented when it came out, but I believe it'll...

50 hp evinrude lower unit re-seal question

I’m re-sealing a lower unit off a 1984 50 hp evinrude. Myquestion is, the three bolts that hold the bearing carrier in place (that havethe little o-rings on them) what kind of torque are you putting on these? I’mafraid of tightening them too much and squashing the o-rings out. Also, while I’mat...

50 hp Evinrude drive shaft seal question...

I have a 1984 50 hp Evinrude that i'm currently doing a complete re-seal in the lower unit on, and what i'm wondering about is the Sierra kit. The upper shaft/ drive shaft that goes to the powerhead has a housing just above the bearing that has 2 shaft seals back to back, one is green colored...

    1996 15 hp 4 stroke....valve clearance specs

Hi guys, for the sake of simplicity, I'm not going to describe the issues I'm having with this motor, I'm pretty well versed on trouble shooting. I'm pretty certain I have a valve clearance issue with this motor, and was wondering if anyone on here could tell me what the proper clearances are on...

    1960 Gale 35 hp gears

Hi guys. I have a 1960 Gale 35 hp. Mechanically, its basically a johnson. I was wondering if the forward and reverse gear in the clamshell/lowerunit are the same?...like can they be reversed if the forward gear's inner shift lobes are getting rounded? seeing that the reverse gear shows less...

Does 24:1 mixture run cooler than 50:1?

Hi everyone. I have a 1965 40 hp Super seahorse. I know it runs 50:1, but I started it yesterday to let it run on 24:1. It ran for a good 15 minutes but the exhaust wasn't giving off any water discharge. The impeller was recently replaced, and the power head was warm, but I was able to touch it...

Does the heat exchanger need to be hooked up?

I have a 1965 40 hp Johnson, As I was informed, the heat goes through the carb over a tension spring, but I have removed the wiring harness, and intend to choke this motor manually. Can I just plug the openings on the exhaust cover and the one on the choke unit on the carb and run it this way...
