So I am a newbie who has only been out in a boat a couple times. I recently moved to within 8 miles of lake wallenpaupac in pa. So a long story short a family friend bought a nice 18 foot checkmate from a local marina in 06 and they froze the engine in the winter of 08 . knuckle heads.. So I bought boat from them 2 weeks ago for 500. I hooked up to trailer and drove it home. I bought a used replacement engine from same marina and am in process of putting it back together. I was just amazed how easily you can remove engine. I did use my backhoe to lift it out of hull. The boat is a 1987 checkmate 18 foot with a 4.3 o.m.c. in it . Gonna put some bellows and gimbal bearing while im at it . Just thought i would share

Welcome aboard !

Good for you. I would be leery buying from the same guy's that froze the motor in the first place but thats me.

Good luck ! need help just post away.

no the marina had nothing to do with it. The owner never had it winterized and put it in the garage two weeks too late. Poor guy pulled it out of garage 0n memorial day of 09 and fired it up in driveway, it ran so he trailered it up to lake and got 100 feet off dock and she started smokin out of the engine compartment.

Fortunately you are on fresh water. None the less you should replace all the rubber parts just so you have a base line of maintenance. When you winterize a raw water cooled engine, you drain all the water out of the engine and exhaust manifolds. I know that's obvious but clearly not to everyone. You can always splash the boat in the winter if the lake is not frozen as long as you drain it again afterward.

I've been Boating in Raritan bay below freezing. My boat is winterized i take it to the bay about a 20 minute drive dip it start it at the dock noones ever there.

Park the truck and trailer, hop on go fishing, come back pull the boat out drain the block and the mani right there, poke the holes put the drive down first to drain that , put up the drive come home,

I close the cocks i put drive down put water to the drive start boat, flush motor.

Pull ears off drive and drain block and mani. poke holes and i'm done.

Well i do pull all the hoses especailly the long one from the transom and pour a cup or 2 of antifreeze down the hoses and i want to see it trickle out the drive.

Then i'm done maybe half hour cause i sneaked a small bottle of vodka, hey it's cold in the winter.

I love it down here...... No winterising necessary, even the temperature gets down to a cool 0 C on the coldest nights, but the boat is in the Carport, so life is fun.

Bruce.

PS. Love the idea of using the Backhoe for engine removal. Wish I had one of those to play with.

yeah the back hoe made the removal simple. Gonna put new engine in on sundaythen its time to tackle the gimbal bearing and bellows then try to find some manifolds. I am getting close to putting on a life jacket I can feel it.

well i just got a call from marina i was gonna buy the used engine from. It seems that when the engine was pulled last year it was never drained so theblock is cracked on this one too. Any ideas where i can find one???

Well now i am switchING everything over to merc, Got everything needed for 1800 plus my good cobra out drive. Now I am really gonna learn this boat, wish me luck.

I went to six marinas today. I think I am back to just putting a 4.3 marine or street engine in this boat and rockin on. Is it true my good workin cobra outdrive is worth $2000 + or - a few.
