Hi all - so ive been thru a rough patch with my mariner - basically been out of the water for 2 months and Ive had friends over and the most serence weather.. so VERY disappointed!

Mine is a 1987 mariner 60hp 3 Cyl (non bigfoot) with the merc powerhead

My trigger part # is: 96455A8
im seeing 6 cylinder triggers on ebay - will these work on a 3 cyl? Part #s are exact except for last digit?

(ie: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Mercury-Out...30b6ee&pid=100011&rk=4&rkt=10&sd=141966241752

My reg/rect is: 816770T

My switchbox is 7778A9

Finally my stator: 398-5704A4/A7

Someone said I can use a 40hp stator and ground out the extra wires.. wondering if i can use other parts from different hp / models - it just gives me a better selection if I can shop on a wider model -

thanks -

No, but one of the switch boxes and 3 of the coils will.

Get a DVA adaptor and a volt meter and do a proper diagnostic. Your talking about alot of money just swapping parts that may still be good. Have you gone through and cleaned all the connectors and grounds? clean the connectors with electrical cleaner and put back together with dielectric grease. Sand all the grounds metal to metal including components that use the mount as a ground. CDI electronics has the proper troubleshooting procedures for the components.

yeah well my stator went down the tubes - im not familiar with all these parts and testing,

fyi the part # for this trigger is the same as mine except for the trailing A number

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Mercury-Tri...8-1-/301724843645?vxp=mtr&hash=item464033be7d

mine is 96455 A8..

of course id have to cut/crimp the ends - an old mariner tech here said its not likely the trigger is gone.. he said i should be ok with the higher reading on one of the readings..

The motor started developing a slight mis at high rpms, then started bogging and dying at higher revs (start/idle was fine).. i had to limp back from ocean twice!

reg/rect isnt passing current thru and batt wasnt charging, that i knew from the start, could running it like this damage sth?

My coil ferrite metal things are all cracked!

anyway - stator is off - so I basically have to test my components on a running motor? coils all gave same readings pri/sec..

reeds seem ok, compression great on all 3..

the bottom 2 plugs werent burning as tan brown as the top one was (ferrite cores?).. or spark issue? i did have fire on all 3, timing light showed this - at one point #3 seemed to be jumping every few seconds. the motor just started running worse and worse - however i could always start it really easily..

I didnt have enough time to index the other 2 pistons tdc and use timing light to verify spark at the right place..

The idle near the end did seem too smooth, it didnt have that choppy 2s sound, so im wondering if one or maybe 2 cyls were firing atdc? would resistance in the trigger cause a delay / affect spark timing?

or could this be my switch box?

Your kinna going off into la la land here. Start from the beginning what are the actual compression numbers good compression means nothing to us.
Does the spark jump a gap of at least 7/16 inch with a open air spark gap tester?
If it passes both the compression and spark gap test you have a fuel issue, all three plugs should be toasty brown like #1, powdery white is a lean condition pull and rebuild the carbs and replace the fuel lines. If your saying the spark plug boots are bad they need replaced.

That trigger WILL NOT work on your engine..you need a 4 wire trigger.

Hi thanks - i found a chap locally who supplies parts - :) and not a bad price either. Tech guy here said triggers kinda work or not.. no half measures - so for now ive ruled out the trigger (despite a higher reading on one of the windings). Going to replace the cracked cores on the coils and stator and reg/rect and see.
