Which side is oil filter on?

Changing the oil and filter for the first time on my new HOnda 4 stroke 8 hp. The manual says to get to the filter remove 6 bolts and remove the R. engine cover. When I look at that to get the cover off there are 2 black plastic fittings sticking through, I wedged them out and they are permanently connected to something inside with little hoses.

I assume when they R they mean right when looking at the motor from behind it? Because this is the side where the oil drain screw is. Anyway, I couldnt imagine what the 2 black fittings were so removed the other side engine cover and there is no filter there.

Can anyone help? Maybe on the first side you pull loose the 2 black plastic things and just hang onto the cover while you are replacing the filter? No way I am disconnecting them and the manual said bolts. (btw these are screws, not bolts) My problem is I am up on a ladder working on a sailboat on a trailer. Almost impossible to hold the loose cover in one hand while messing with the filter Very long day with no success.

Thanks

Yes, the R side is the right side...from the rear....or starboard side.

Just push the hoses off of the black plastic fittings. The clear hose is the drain for your carburetor. The black hose is the water telltail hose. Just remember, when you reconnect them and reinstall the side cover, make sure that they are not pinched by the side cover.

As Mike says, note how those hoses are routed BEFORE pulling them off of the plastic fitting. If you don't put them back EXACTLY the same way then you will pinch them and block them off when you reinstall the side cover. Then, you won't have a reliable tell tale stream for your water pump nor will you be able to easily drain your carb. And, if you don't want to have carb problems, you will want to get into the habit of draining it anytime you're not going to be using the outboard for more than a few days. Leaving today's alcohol laden gasoline sitting in your carb attracts moisture and even condensate water contains minerals that will rather quickly plug up the tiny passages in your carburetor. If they get even partially plugged, the outboard won't run properly and getting the carb cleaned is the only solution.
DRAIN THAT CARB!.....And your Honda will thank you.

Good luck
