First post + new to forum, trying to address a new Honda requirement before we purchase it. Were planning a fishing boat and before we purchase everything I need some advice on the prop? We decided on a Tracker Guide V14 ( Canada rated 15hp https://www.trackerboats.com/boat/?boat=4591) with a trailer, and after a couple days of reviews, utube, etc, I have decided on the Honda BF15.Which I think is the only 15hp outboard by Honda. This will be mainly trolling slow about 7/8 to 1 mph or maybe even a tad faster and boat with 600 lbs total including the motor in that. So what prop pitch would be best 1st purchase to try and get those low speed and hopefully not over rev engine on top end. I realize it's a fine line but what might be a good start to try and capture the most of both worlds give or take a little. Something I also want to add is I only want the manual recoil to start the engine so is there some sort of wiring harness I'll need to purchase to keep a 12V battery charged, for fish finder, and eventually for an electric winch for an anchor. Thank You in advance for any help..
The 15 manual start comes with a 6 amp charge coil and preinstalled charge receptacle. Yes, you will need to purchase the adapter plug and wire assembly to rig your battery for charging. See item 2 in the link below.
Besides the stock 9 1/4" × 10p four blade Honda offers 4 optional props for this outboard. The one I think would get you closer to what you're trying to accomplish would be the 9 1/4" × 7p. See link below for choices.
However, this engine idles at around 950 rpm and I have my doubts that the flatter pitched prop would get you down to 1mph. And, you would no doubt have more difficulty getting on plane with a load.
You may want to consider a drogue system for slow trolling. It's an inexpensive and adjustable way to go if you don't care to get into the expensive aftermarket prop experiment world.
Like you say, it's a fine line and a "comprise prop" is bound to leave you unhappy in one area or another.
I'm no expert and this is just my opinion. Whatever you decide, I wish you good luck.
