Ok just sold my 1999 lund pro-v /2000 115 honda on it today or so i thought. The motor has 45 hours on it used very little hence the reson i sold it. Anyway the guy that bought it was very nice and seemed very knowlegable about lunds and bout motors in general. So to my suprise i get a call from him saying he took the boat to the lake let it idle for 10 min checked to see it was cooling and everything working properly. Then took off down the lake cruising at 20 to 25mph and the said the motor just locked up on him with no warning lights or alarms. He said he's had alot of experience around boats but had never seen anything like it. He talked to a mech at his marina and they told him it sounded like the lower unitand asked if i had put gear lube in it. Well i hadn't used the boat this year yet and it stayed in my garage all winter. Wheni stored it last fall i popped the lower gear lube screw/plug to check for water, there was none i let out maybe 4 - 8 drops of gear lube, put the plug back in and called it good for the winter. Now there was no oil leakage on my garage floor this winter either. Yes i should have checked it before i sold it but so should have he. I do know the oil in the engine was good (synthetic and very clean )so i didn't bother to change it last fall but did check it this spring and it was full. The only other variable would be i had hit 2 logs back in 2007 when i first bought it on atrip up in canada, replaced the aluminum props back then and also had an issue with the little metal tab on the neutral safety switch (bent it back in place to work) during tha same trip but has worked fine ever since. LIke i said ididn't get to use the boat alot but last year hit another small branch out in the middle of the lakethis prop was a 17 pitch but could just barely see any bend to it. Because there was so very little vibration when driving the boat just used it at the end of summer. SOOOOOO!!! My question would be what are the first things to check when i get the boat back tomorrow. I know the guy told me it won't run or start just nothing, he also said he put a wrench on the motor (where i don't know) and tried to turn the motor over and said he couldn't turn it at all. He said he's still very much interested in buying it. And yes ive been told that i hold all the cards given i've put the check in the bank and he has the signed title, and i could just walk away sold as is. But i'm not that type of person so any suggestions would be very much appreciated. Thanks

Well - it's tough to diagnose at that kind of distance. You need to post more info when you get it back. You have covered the very basic stuff - check the oil, check the lower unit oil (pull the bottom fill plug and see if the magnetize plug has a lot of metal attached to it.) Check that the motor will rotate in neutral. Check that the battery terminals have not come loose. Check the the ECM is getting 12 volts. Check the fuses.

Got the boat back talked to the guy he said the starter will engage but the motor won't turn at all he said he pulled all the plugs and put a wrench on the the top flywheel nut and can't move the motor, he also said his marine mechanic said nine times out of ten that that points to the lower unit, and its common for a lower unit low on oil to run like he said for 10 min and then lock up like that. If thats the case whats the bestcase/worstcase senerio as far as cost, and would it be possible to do myself with the prpoer tools and manual.

In addition to what has already been said, If it were mine, I'd remove the lower unit and ascertain if it was the powerhead or lower unit seized, and go from there.

Well pulled the lower unit just touched the key motor turned over it must be the lower unit my question today is i need to get it rebuilt checked out a few places local and on the web. The mech i was going to bring it to is keeping it pretty vague and says could be $2000 - $3000. And i understand that he won't know until he opens it up how bad it will be. Same with another marina nearby ($3500) if it needs a new case and all. But another local marine shop says $1500 for parts and $200 for labor if every thing is fried in it. Then i go on the web and find atlantic gearcase they tell me $1400 to rebuild it plus what ever the cost to ship back and forth, they also have a better warranty than the local guys. But the local guys claim that thier using cheap aftermarket parts but on their website they say genuine Honda parts. Now i'm really confused which way to go. Any ideas would be much appreciated

I also understand that this is mare a forum for the do it yourselfer but i don't think i have the resources to do the job my self and also a warranty would also be a good selling point if i plan to still sell my boat

Tough call. If it were me, I would go with the factory re-build and warranty, unless I had exceptionally high trust in the local shop and their techs. From what I see in the shop manual, a lower unit rebuild can be quite tricky. However, I would spend some time checking out the Atlantic Gearcase folks via lots of Google/Bing searches.
