water pump key or pin

going to change water pump during gear case rebuild but got a question. drive shaft takes a half moon key like a fly wheel key, but all pump kits ether offer pin or wedge impeller keys, i know the wedge won't work. so will the pin type key work in the half moon key way in the drive shaft?

Just use the pin and push the impeller down then lube it with some dish soap and turn the driveshaft clockwise while pushing down on the impeller housing. Pull the spark plugs so it is easy to turn the flywheel clockwise to line up the splines.

Someone has put a pre 1980 lower unit on that motor as late 1985up use wedge, 1985 older use roller and early 1979 and older use key. Use the correct impeller not the pin type as to narrow for key. The correct impeller is 377230 or kit 389133

thanks , got motor from a boat grave yard in norfork, va. top end been pretty good. guess many parts inter change from the late 70's to about 88/89.
note got another post going about the lower unit.
