Wanting information on 2000 Merc 50hp 2stroke 3cyl

I've heard bad things about the oil injection system on these older mercury 2 strokes and how the nylon gear can overheat and cause catastrophic failure. I am a first-time owner and learn daily as I go. Basically, I just want to know how to tell if mine is bulletproof or if I should have the local shop remove it. I appreciate any responses as I know little.
