Walter V-Drive RV-20

My Walter V-drive is now out of my 1976 Silverton 31' (220hp crusaders FWC) trying to find a replacement but here on long island not having any luck. Have not taken unit apart yet but am now thinking of getting it rebuilt, what would be a fair price? and could an average weekend mechanic do this himself? also if anyone knows of one please let me know.

thanks
bob

Bob,

Have you talked to Walters yet? Being in Jersey City they are pretty close. I found an invoice for an RV-26 about 6 years ago...$536...for exactly what .. I do not know

Had the drive looked and it is "beyond economical repair" did find out it is a 2.05 to 1 ratio, also looked at many scrap boats over weekend and none had the same drive. Any leads on locating one would be appreciated.

thanks
bob

Looks like I will be trying to find a RV-26, doesnt seem like any RV-20s out there. A local guy took apart and said the ratio is 2.05 - 1 ( he looked at the gears) the ID plate is missing but i have not yet cleaned the bilge so hopefully it is laying in the muck. Any inguiries to purchase new seem to require serno?

I understand the rv-26 will require differnt shimming/alignment....has anyone made this change?

I have a RV 20D sitting on my bench. It originally was in my 31 silverton and broke. Had a mechanic put in a $900 rebuild kit and have been keeping it for a spare. Would consider selling. Location is Frankfort, Mi.

Finally found a WALTER V-DRIVE RV-20D (LEARNED ALOT) MY V-DRIVE HAS THE 20D ( D IS DIRECT MOUNT TO TRANNY)

Well I lucked out and got 2 complete exact match V-drive with tranny still hooked up so at the end of the day i will have a extra V-drive (rv20d) and both a Left Hand and Right Hand transmission.

QUESTION- on the ID plate for the tranny there is a "R" stamped slightly above the serial number, this is only on one of the v-drive/tranny combos the other assembly only has the the serial number.

Am I correct to asumme that the "R" means "right hand rotation" ??

curriously my tranny for my Right Hand engine (starboard side) does not have a "R" and neither does my left, would like to drop in entire unit but am afraid to put in the wrong one

thanks
Bob

I must second the motion to call the guys at Walter Gear. I don't remember the name but when I rebuilt two of them a couple years ago they walked me thru the whole process on the phone while I followed along using the diagrams they sent me. The parts cost the moon but I saved a ton of labor charges. Very very good company to deal with. All old school mech heads.
The oil pump should give you a clue as to the rotation. Pump outlet to the cooler will be on the side of rotation. So, looking at the drive from the rear will tell you.

Just remember this....YOU MUST give them a serial number or they won' t give you the time of day. But I agree, they are quite willing to help out ONCE you give them a serial number

Great stuff...............never thought of "R" being for rebuilt at factory kinda makes sense since niether of my orginal tranny has that stamped on it and one thing I did notice was the serial number of one of my trannys is only 3 digits off of the 2 I just picked up meaning to me they were on the assy line together

One thing I thought the V-drive was universal (ok for either RH or LH rotation) I was concerned about the tranny. My original tranny was fine. Maybe I should play it safe and use my old tranny with one of my used V-drive. I will call Walters tommorow .........with serno

Bob:

based on the little data I have, they add and idler gear to make the gear work with a reverse rotation. I see no indication of how they note that fact in the model number.

Based on the few notes about their insistance on using serial numbers, I'd guess that the serial number is the key to the actual configuration of the gear.

Good news, with help from a local mech learned that on my 2 trannys there is a plate facing the bell housing with "top and a arrow pointing either clockwise or counter clockwise" at the top on the bottom also is the word "top" (upside down) with arrow facing the other direction bottom line is either tranny could have been used by removing the bolts and spinning cover to the other orientation. What i did was just match up my tranny only with the full up tranny/ v-drive combo and am now good to go.

FYI the unit with the "R" stamped on the tranny id plate was not the RH rotation.............maybe R is for factory rebuilt as mentioned here

If you're talking about the reverse rotation, it's the v drive right?

does this mean that the tranny could be used for left hand or right hand drive thanks
