VRO converted to pre mix replacement pump issue

I used 1 of the made for pre mix (not purchased from Marine Engine) to replace my failed VRO pump. Boat will start, idle and get up on plane great, but runs out of gas at anything over 1/3 throttle. Never an issue before original pump went out. Was told by selling company this was the right replacement for my ‘89 Johnson 200 GT. Thank you for any help.
