"What is involved in replacing the tilt, trim motor on a 1992 120hp Johnson?Does the port side engine mount have to be removed? If so what is the removal procedure?I watched someone try to remove an engine mount that appeared to be frozen to the tilt tube with a 2lb hammer and he totally mangled the tube.I would like to do the repair the right way and would like to know what problems if any I might run into. Thanks"

"u are supposed to remove the whole unit, and do the repairs on the bench,..its not always that way 'in-the-real-world',and u can remove the port side stern bracket for access."

"As JWB states, you can remove

"As JWB states, you can remove the port transom bracket to gain access to the electric motor screws, but that can sometimes create a dangerous situation if one is not carefull. To remove the whole unit.....

There's no need to remove the engine to remove the PTT unit. First, have the engine in the fully tilted position and lock it there.

Then, simply remove the three retaining bolts from each side, then the top pin from the center lift cylinder. Back out the manual release valve two turns and then force the tilt cylinder rod down as far as it will go. Disconnect the electric motor wires. Now, simply tilt the PTT unit back and out from between the transom brackets."

It is a fastrac unit. The motor

It is a fastrac unit. The motor is presently on an engine cart.I was planning on lifting it with my engine hoist to do the repair.Based on your input I think I am going to remove the port side engine mount. Is removing the mount just a matter of undoing the tilt tube nut and removing the other fasteners then sliding the mount off or will I need a puller or something else to get it off the tube? Do I need to be concerned about it being difficult to remove becuase of possible corrosion? Thanks for your help!

"Hello, I am new to fourm, I also need to replace trim motors. My engines are twin 1990 johnson 200hp. So Joe should I do as you stated, tilt the motor all the way up, to get at the motor? Also the manual locks on both engines are totally rusted away I know these can be replaced but how do they come apart?
Thank You
John

After taking a good look I have decided to remove the unit and replace the motor on a bench. The manual release screw turns easy and there isn't as much corrosion as I had thought.I sprayed the pins and bolts with PB blaster just for good measure.I hope the upper and lower pins come out without to much persuasion. Thanks for your input.

"I have tried to remove the up

"I have tried to remove the upper tilt clinder pin by removing the snap rings and driving the pin out with heavy hammer and punch. The pin didn,t move.Should I try applying heat? Will a propane torch supply enough heat or do I need to use an acetylene torch?Any advice or suggestions for removing the pin would be appreciated. Thanks"

"Hi Joe,I went back this morning and used a piece of steel round stock 5/8"x12" as a punch and was able to remove the top pin without applying heat.I also was able to remove the motor without taking out the bottom pin.I had enough access just by tilting the unit back. What is the best way to clean the filter screen before I install the new (used) motor? Will I be OK with the o-ring that's on the new(used) motor ?Thanks and MERRY CHRISTMAS"
