"This message was previously posted in the wrong category. Very sorry. New member. Anyway, this my sutuation. I have a 1991 ? Johnson 120, 2 cyc with oil injection sitting on a 1991 Seaswirl, 195 Sierra Classic. Just got it and little things are bugging me but fixable until now. The down button for the power trim, on the throttle handle does not work. The up button works and both work on the motor. I have tried to get inside the throttle handle to take a look. I took the screw out of the neutral lockout(?) button. It looks like the throttle handle should slide out and off of the shaft. It is stuck or ? and I don't want to force it. If I knew for certain that is where it comes off I would be a little more determined. As it stands, I don't know what the trim button problem is because I can't get a look at it. Can you help me with the process to get the throttle handle off of the shaft so that I can view the trim buttons? If that is what I need to do anyway! Once I get to the buttons I may have another question(S) but I'll cross that bridge when I get there. Thanks!

you might want to check the re

you might want to check the relays in the rear.
do you hear a clicking noise when you press the button?
other than that check all connections for rust
corrision etc.dielectric grease will help with that.

"it wont be a relay,if it wks

"it wont be a relay,if it wks on the motor.......
ck wiring to switch,......and ck switch,w/meter,in down mode."

"it seems like i read in one o

"it seems like i read in one of his other posts, that was under some lengthy older threads, that he couldnt get the trim switch away from the handle..........ive never had to take mine apart so couldnt advise him how to.

thought that bit of info might help."

"I can't get the throttle

"I can't get the throttle handle off of the unit. I believe there is a screw on the backside of the handle that holds the handle halves together. I can't get to the screw. And, I can't be sure that is the way to access the trim buttons on the thumb end of the throttle handle. The handle is on a splined shaft. It looks like it should slide off but things are old, I don't want to force it, and it doesn't want to come off as it is. I'm hoping somebody can tell me how to get to the trim buttons. Stuck! Thanks for the comments.

"sorry i didnt read your post

"sorry i didnt read your post this time i was going off memory (bad idea)and didnt realize you already said you couldnt get the handle off

heres how..... i had to search a little but i knew i saw it somewhere

Remove it from the boat and remove the screws that hold the halves together. Also remove the screw that holds the handle on. It may be Allen or Torx head. Loosen the handle screw a turn or two, then give it a light whack with a hammer and punch..that will knock the handle off the shaft--then take the screw on out."

"I think I'm getting close

"I think I'm getting close! It seems though, in order to get the unit off of the boat, I would have to get the handle off first. Is that possible?"

"no you should have 2 screws &

"no you should have 2 screws (most likely with nuts, washers and lock washers) holding the control assembly to the boat......then you should have 3 screws holding the control unit together on the mounting side of the unit.

its easier to disassemble/reassemble with the warm-up lever pulled up about midway.

after you get it apart you can see the alan/torx bolt in the middle of the handle."

"David

The control unit is

"David

The control unit is mounted on the side panel and access to the back of the controls is difficult, at best. Sombody had to install it so I suppose I can get it off, but

As a reminder, this is on a 1991 Seaswirl, 195 Sierra Classic.

There are two accessible screws at the bottom of the side panel. How the top of the side panel attaches is a puzzle.

If I can get the side panel off, removal of the controls would be easier.

Does the top of the side panel detach easily and/or is removal of the side panel an option?

Thanks!

"do you have any pics?

mine

"do you have any pics?

mine is a '79 bass boat and theyre a little tough to get to in mine also.....the first time i took mine off i was twisted around and laying in the floor, with my arm up inside the panel up to my arm pit, while i was feeling aorund i thought to myself this is a great place to get spider bit
uhoh.gif
.....i stopped and put on a glove.

you may have to ahve someone help you with the screws......a #3 phillips screw driver and 1/2" wrench is what i used for mine"

That diagram is exactly what I

That diagram is exactly what I need. My unit is different though.

I will send a picture.

My throttle handle is the only part of the unit that is outside the side panel.

Your response is appreciatively quick. Thanks for everything.

"Tim, You have what is called

"Tim, You have what is called a (concealed side mount control). Nothing like what David's link shows. The lever is held on with a single set screw. Place the lever in reverse to a horizontal position, now the bottom of the lever is pointing forward. In that position on the bottom of the lever which is now facing forward is a small access hole to the set screw. Loosen with an Allen wrench and the lever comes of. Thats assuming you have an OMC control, Morse and others may be different. That is if memory serves me correctly."

"Thanks Allan!

That describ

"Thanks Allan!

That describes exactly what I remember. I didn't see the set screw but I know there is a "cut-out" on the bottom of the handle, like you describe.

That must be why the handle didn't want to come off of the splined shaft after I removed the screw at the end of the shaft.

I appreciate your attention and I was able to follow your directions very clearly.

I'm not where the boat is right now but anxious to give it a try! I'll let you know how it goes.

Thanks again!
