Timing

"I own a 2002 Glaston with a V

"I own a 2002 Glaston with a Volvo Penta 5.0GL-B. Last year the boat run great, but idle to high around 1100rpms. This Spring I checked the timing and I saw a V wedge with white paint in the middle of the V wedge and noticed the mark was advanced from the center of the V wedge. I set the timing so the mark was in the middle of the V wedge and the idle went down to 600 rpms which is where it should be. I also changed spark plugs, distributor cap and rotor. When I took the boat out and pushed it to WOT the motored back fired and had very little power. When I slowly pushed the throttle to WOT it would only run around 3700 rpms. It should be 4400-4800 rpms. Also, I had about 10-15 gallons of old fuel, but added 15 gallons of new fuel before I went out. I have not siphoned the fuel out because I think this may be some type of timing issue. Any ideas?

Thanks"

"I may be getting this wrong,

"I may be getting this wrong, but the marks you are talking about indicate the TDC of #1 piston. I believe your engine needs a 5 to 10 degrees advance at idle depending on which fuel you are using. Therefore, if you lined-up the marks, the timing is retarded now. This would explain the poor performance.

You may want to check the Seloc manual and reset the idle ignition timing....."

That might explain it. I have

That might explain it. I have a Clymer manual that says the same thing. The only problem is there are no markings to indicate a 5 or 10 degree advance over TDC (just the V wedge) and when I do advance the idle increases.

"Steve, Ignition timing is certainly a place to check.
When doing this, we must always have a good and accurate TDC marking for # 1 cylinder. (we don't want any in-accuracies here)
From there, we want good and accurate markings on the tab, and markings up to 30 degrees BTDC on the harmonic balancer so that we can check/set TAT.
You'll get the best performance if you use this procedure.

With an engine fully assembled and in the boat, there is a method that can be used to find accurate TDC.
If you need a suggestion on how to check this, post back"

"There are two ways.
1 -The easiest. Get a timing light with built in advance adjustment. Set the desired advance, and keep the 2 marks aligned and You are set.
2; Measure and calculate the ballancer. Take a piece of tape and measure out the number of degrees needed transferred to mm or inches, then adjust.
Adjusting idle by playing with timing advance is definitely not the correct way!!"

"Steve, you just need a timing

"Steve, you just need a timing light with digital advance setting, like this one

http://www.etoolcart.com/equus-innova-digital-advance-timing-light-inn3568.aspx

Basically, you set in the light the ignition timing advance you wish (in degrees BTDC), start the engine, point the light to the vibration damper, and when the two marks you mentioned in your post coincide... volilá!!!! you got the timing set right.

"OH, I'm not that trusting! You guys go ahead!
I want to see in "Real Time".... and in "Real Degrees" what my ignition is doing at idle right on up to what it's doing @ 3,200 rpm or so (depending on which engine I am setting TAT on)."

Thanks for the replies.. Much appreciated!

I have some more information to add and another question concerning setting the timing. I have the Delco EST (Electronic Spark Timing) system that requires a shunt tool (Volvo Penta P/N 885163-6) that plugs into the module on the distributor that shuts down electronic spark advance. I didn’t have this tool when I first tried to set the timing so obviously I’m going to be off. Once I get this “shunt tool” do you think I’ll still need the timing with digital advance setting and do you know of any motors with no timing marks other then the V wedge? I’m I just missing something?

Thanks in advance..

"If you don't have other t

"If you don't have other timing marks except for the two notches, I would suggest you still use the timing light with digital advance, as you still need to set the spark advance at idle. The EST will control the spark advance at higher RPM according to its built-in advance curve, but not at idle."

"Hi El,

You said the timing

"Hi El,

You said the timing depends upon the fuel you are using, can you elaborate on that. I have a AQ130D engine and I set my timing at 8 degrees. sounds good, and I get about 32 MPH a WOT. If I use Hi-test what should I set the timming at?"

mmmmm... "Back in the day&

mmmmm... "Back in the day" we used to time hi performance engines exactly to the gas we were using by advancing the timing until the engine just started to "ping" under full load and then retarding it very slightly.

That said... you might get another MPH or so out of the engine at the expense of running your engine above the MAX recommended RPMs. You MAY also get a bit better acceleration.

I'd leave it at the factory recommended setting.
"Back in the Day" we weren't all that worried about "engine life" and mechanics didn't charge lawyer-like hourly rates either...Also if an engine that was so tuned "malfunctioned" getting home safely was rarely an issue.

I brought shunt tool (Volvo Penta P/N 885163) The manual says "connect bare lead to a 12-volt engine B+ source." Do you know what a B+ source may be. The connection wire is about 10 inch long.

Thanks!

"And if you know what the "A" and "C" sources refer to, you're REALLY old and probably a nerd :)"

"Hey Robert, is that a test? Well, then my guess is that A stands for Accessory (or Ignition); B for Battery; C for Choke; M for Magneto; and S for Start.

But wait a minute, you did not ask for M and S, did you?

The timing gun with digital ad

The timing gun with digital advance worked like a charm.. Used it to set the timing and the boat runs great. Thanks for the help. Much appreciated!..

"You are welcome, Steve.

Robert, I had vacuum tube radio and TV at home when I was a kid, so I guess that makes me "old" for today's standards.

Need help on this shunt thing. I guess I need to order one as I didn't use it in setting the timing and I feel I have poort performance. What exactly does the shunt do and how do I use it?
