Timing, Mercury 175 EFI

I am in the process of setting the timing on a Mercury 175 EFI. In the manual I have it says to set the static idle timing to what appears to be a range. 0 degrees to -9 degrees ATDC. I am using the cranking method of setting the timing.

Can anyone tell me why the timing is listed in the set up numbers as a range?

Thanks in advance for any help.

I think if you read a little further you will see WHY the idle timing varies - it is because it's controlled by the engine computer (ECU) which will vary it as "it sees fit".

These models do not have timing adjustments (they do but they can only be set with a diagnostic terminal - basically re-flash the parameters), so not quite sure you are trying to set here or how you would do it???

On models where you can set the timing, you can not set the idle timing at cranking speed (that can be used for max timing but not idle). To set idle timing on NON-ECU models, the motor must be running at the specified idle rpm range.

What year as if not a DFI it sets up the same as NON-ECU models and ECU does not control timing as thats controlled by stablizer/advance module. The reason there is a range is motors with more hours like a little more timing vs a fresh motor.
