timing belt

I checked this site, under "pre 1997" they only went back to 1990, I have a 1984 BF 100L what year did they change to a different belt?
 
There is no model number BF100L....that is probably part of your serial number. I think you posted the same question on another thread. If your serial number is B100L-16xxxxx, then your model is a BF100E.

The part number is 14400-921-024. Retail is about $42 and there are 16 in various Honda warehouses.

My model number on the motor is BF100L(L is for leg length long)1602124
I get pre 1997 part number 14400-ZV4-004 also 14400-921-024 which fits the BF8, I am told the BF8 uses the older BF100 motor, is this true or does the second number replace the original part number???
 
The 14400-zv4-004 is the belt for older 9.9 and 15 hp through about 2001. That will not fit.

The original belt for your motor was 14400-921-014 and it has superceded to 14400-921-024. This belt does also fit the older "classic" 8 HP's.
