Timing Belt Inspection

I have both a BF9.9 and 200 engines. What should I be looking for while inspecting the timing belts? Would there be anything I should be listening for while its operating? And is this a repair for a DIY or should it be handles by a professional shop?

Thanks!

Hi,

I've never actually replaced a timing belt on either of those outboards but I have done several for other twin cylinder Hondas. So, I wouldn't hesitate to change one on the 9.9.

The 200 and 9.9 engines are far enough removed from one another in size and design that the answer to your question might be a split decision concerning DIY and PRO.

The 9.9 is a simple "slip on" belt arrangement while I believe that the 200 has a spring tensioned "auto adjuster" that complicates things a bit.

I wouldn't suggest that even a seasoned mechanic replace either one without first reading that section in the appropriate shop manual. Because, if you don't get it right, the FIRST time, it might destroy your engine upon start up.

Good luck.
